With all 5 springs the wammy will exibit more resistance in your hand.
So if you have fewer springs the wammy is more 'buttery' in your hand.
But the effect can actually be the opposite if you are pulling up on the wammy
depending on the balance between stings and springs. lol

The tremelo will 'float' with three or less strings, such that the bridge is not flush with the body. With a 'float' you can pull up to raise the pitch in addition to (more commonly) diving down to lower the pitch. With four or five springs, the bridge will generally be flush with the body (no 'float'). As such, you can only dive to lower pitch.

Be wary, though, because making the bridge flush against the body may affect the intonation. For me, I prefer four springs. The guitar stays in tune better with the brige not floating. Also, I am a heavy trem user and prefer more resistance in the whammy bar. I played with five for a while, but found it to be too much resistance. Three for me always felt too light.

Just my $0.02...

You can float the trem with whatever number of springs you want: 2, 3, 4, 5.

You can make it flush to the body with whatever number of springs you want: 2, 3, 4, 5.

All it takes is screwing in or screwing out the two trem claw screws.

In my most humble opinion, I don't mess with the trem at all. The bar is still in the case and I've adjusted my springs for max stability. Truth is, once I touch the whammy (it could be just me....), the guitar is out of tune. For tremolo, I use my fingers, and a little hip gyration (ugly but effective... )
If you want to dive-bomb whammy, get a Jackson with a Floyd Rose.
