Thanks chaps! Being nitro, I doubt if it'll stay pristine for long, but - while I'm generally not keen on relics - I do rather like a bit of 'fair wear and tear'. And the setup has resulted in a low buzz-free action, with the idiosyncrasies cured.

For anyone in GB within striking (or mailing) distance of Felixstowe, I can recommend Steve at Guitarlodge. Not the cheapest luthier/tech, but his work speaks for itself.

Cheers - Peter.

Ah yes, I forgot I actually changed it for mint green early on (before the refinish). I had one knocking around and it looked nice with the Ocean Blue Metallic. Well spotted!

The Sonic Blue actually looks a bit paler, and the pickguard is a bit greener, than the camera's picked up. For the body, the first close-up is probably nearest. The other plastics are standard '06-ish parchment. One nice thing is that the sprayer has retained the body ID, and the paperwork shows that it's the original body, refinished from Ocean to Sonic nitro. I'm not selling, but eventually someone will appreciate that info, I suppose.

The Fat 50's were nice, but ultimately I prefer the mid-noughties pups that were fitted to UK Strats. We didn't get staggered pole-pieces for some reason, and I like that. I'm not a fan of buying a Strat and ripping the pups straight out (give them a while before deciding, I think) but I've always found the noughties jobs make all the right noises for me. And Fender obviously thought they were good enough to fit for at least 12 years... Meanwhile the Fat 50-loaded pickguard can stay in my box of bits for swapping back should I ever sell the guitar.

Cheers - Peter.

I like that term, have not heard that before.
We use the more awkward "two-thousands"

If I tried using the term "Mid-Noughties" at work I would probably be called to a meeting with human resources

In a few words you swapped the Fat '50s over the old AlNiCo V singles from the mid-1980s.

OK, Ocean Blue Metallic is very nice, but a pro refinish to Sonic Blue nitro is fantastic! Fat 50's swapped for the 'noughties' unstaggered AmStd pups (always loved these) and a pro setup completes the equation for me. Because of the deal I did, the whole thing has cost me less than £500. What do you reckon?! Cheers - Peter.

Sorry I bored you, Chromeface (you sound like the missus!).

So these are the pups you had in the 80's (in the US)? I think we had them from 2000 - 2012. Still, we're usually a few years behind, aren't we?!

@Peter S Fender began using the AlNiCo 5s in 1986.

From 2000 to 2012 custom staggered polepieces replaced the previous flush poles. Three years earlier they made the switch from the TBX to the DeltaTone system featuring a no-load tone circuit and a hot bridge pickup.

There's quite a lot of difference in what you had in the States, then, to what we got here. The only TBX-equipped Strat I had in the 90's was a Plus; the others (I owned three AmStds) had a straightforward 250k pot.

And as I recall we had flat polepieces (certainly on my 06's) right up to the Fat 50's, and the Delta Tone / hotter bridge pup from 2000 (when the Original Body Contour came back).

I know we've had this discussion before, but I still find it odd that Fender chose to make US Strats and UK Strats, at the same time, with these differences! For costing reasons alone it doesn't seem to make much sense.

Cheers - Peter.

Usually I don't fall for blue guitars, but the light blue ones (Sonic and Daphne) are the exceptions. This one turned out way nice, congrats.

I've heard that one before. Even said it myself a couple of times.

Daphne Blue was chosen by Eric Clapton for the 2010 Limited Edition Custom Artist series. He chose this finish to match one of his Ferraris. Discontinued as of November 2011.

I wasn't really into blue - Strats should only be black, sunburst or perhaps titanium. But then I sprayed Odee Daphne and I am completely hooked. I now have two Daphne Strats.

It is a great lounge guitar colour (subject to your decor of course) and very laid back and conservative without being boring.

Also examples in the hands of Eric and Prince so sub zero cool.

....I quite like blue.

I'm thinking this is probably more in line with that quote:-
