texas specials are good, but so are many other. none are "better" since they're all very different. if you like the sound of the TS, get those.

if you find you like the sound of something more, get those instead.

a LOT of the sound has to do more with your amp than any pickup. investing in good pickups, but playing through a crate practice amp is a waste of money.

Welcome to the forum. There are several threads on Texas Specials and other pickups in the pickups and accessories area :

It really comes down to what kind of tone/sound are you looking for.

What guitar do you have now and what pickups are on it? You might not notice any difference at all, to be honest.

My quick thoughts...

- If you're using mid to hi gain sounds, that probably isn't the best guitar. But, the texas special or other better quality pickups (i'm partial to seymour duncan) will help and give you a much better tone, only some of which will be noticeable on that amp.

- If you're using mainly clean to mid gain tones, you might not notice any real difference on that amp. I'd save that money, and wait until you have a few hundred and get a good used tube amp. you've notice a major difference in your tone and your "feel" for the strings.

Just my opinion...

You don't even have to buy a used amp.

Epiphone has the Valve Junior half-stack for $250, and there are new Valve models coming soon, if they're not out already. There's a Valve Junior Hot Rod head, and Valve Senior combos and heads.

They're cheap, but plenty of people swear by them. There are also entire sites devoted to Valve Junior mods.

(I don't mean to sound like I'm advertising for Epiphone, but they make a mighty nice amp).

Just FYI, if your trying to fix the hum issues in the 1,2, and 3 positions, Texas specials will probably not change that. Thats your good old single coil hum.
I like the dimarzio Area 61 pickups as a quiet substitute to texas specials. Maybe not the same exact sound, but VERY good single coil sound with no hum. You would end up spending more money on pickups than the guitar cost, but if you upgrade your strat you could always move the better pickups into that as well.

Visit my site and listen to Texas Flood for an idea of what TX Specials thru a Line6 (Spyder II 112, in my case) sounds like. Marooned (Jam) is the EMG-SA's (DG20) set.
