I have heard nothing but good things about these guitars. I have a opportunity to buy one, it looks good, plays good and sounds good. Just wondering what the general opinion of these guitars is?

If you like it, it plays nicely, and the price is right, that would suggest to me you should buy it?

Others opinions are almost irrelevant. Strat ownership is something of a journey and, once you start, it is unlikely this will be your last (although it took me 21 years to buy Strat 2 as I was so happy with my first one - it was an American Standard).

I think, in many things, it is good to be familiar with the cheaper end of the spectrum as, when in time you progress to more exotic offerings, you will have a point of reference and better enjoy the refinements of the more expensive.

A Strat of that vintage (assuming it is legitimate and you don't pay over the odds) will sell for the same in 6 month or a year so you shouldn't loose anything if, ultimately you decide to go for something further up the list.

And parts are almost infinitely interchangeable on MiMs and MiA's (with some exceptions) so the MiM you buy tomorrow might be an MiA in 5 years time even though it is the same guitar -based on the labourers broom syndrome.

[Edit] Didn't read MiJ, or it didn't go in, so ignore the last paragraph. I'm reading about a lot of love for 80's MiJ's so it could well be a case of get it while you can afford it because they are going up. [/edit]

If it "looks good, plays good and sounds good" and the price is right to you, why would you bother what anyone else thinks..?

Personally, I'm a fan of MIJ's, and the earlier on the eighties the better.
But: check that the guitar is authentic. There are too many 1983 MIJ Fenders that were born as 1997 Squiers, or non-FMIC at all...

Considering they're all cnc cut & routed like the rest of them, they'd be fairly consistent with Mexico.

They have a certain enigma in certain parts of the world.. And that adds to the 'mystique' because you can't buy them new. Also the value. But truth be told, they are probably no better than what comes out of Mexico with the exception of electronics and some hardware. And I mean that you may want to replace them if they aren't up to par.

I've got a Japanese Charvel and truth be told, it's no better or worse than a USA or Mexican one.

80's MIJ are fine guitars, but they are candidates for pot and pickup replacement. The pots they used then were ok, but CTS's would be a big improvement. The pickups are a bit more of a personal taste thing. Some like em, some don't, so if you like the tone, buy it.

Ahemm... some MIJ Strats of the eighties (and later) had/have US electronics.
And anyways, I think the "inferior electronics thang" often associated with MIJ's is exaggerated. I've had no more problems than with any other Strats...

I own 3 1986 MIJ Strats (57RI, 68RI, and 72RI). They are fabulous guitars.

You do need to know what you are looking at to not get ripped off.

A Chicago area GC has an '86 MiJ Squier, for dirt cheap and it's a fabulous strat. It was loud just unplugged, pups sounded good too, but the feel was just great.
I have a '90s MiJ which is a different beast but looks like these 80's MiJs are worth checking out.
