A friend of mine has recently passed away and his widow has gifted me with one of his guitars but it's got me a bit stumped.

Fender Stratocaster with a serial number of MZ2234***. The number, and Made in Mexico, is on the back of the headstock. The front of the headstock has classic spaghetti logo, Original Contour Body, etc. I've seen a lot of MIM Strats but this one seems special. Sunburst, rosewood fretboard, staggered pole piece pups, gloss finish to the headstock and back of the neck, full size trem block, vintage trem saddles and Kluson style tuners. All in all it just looks too good to be a MIM standard Strat. I thought I was pretty knowledgeable about Strats but this one has me wondering if there was some special model from 2002 that I'm not aware of?

You could feed the serial number to https://www.fender.com/product-registra ... ial-search
If it's in the database, you get the model series, and can go further with that.
And emailing Fender (support pages > Customer Relations) usually brings back the original specs for a serial number.

Help from the forum is usually possible only with plenty of good quality pics.

Sorry about your friend - remember him every time you play that Strat.

Allied to the rosewood board would perhaps suggest Classic 60's or something along those lines?

You note a gloss finish to the neck but not the body which might suggest a nitro' finish to the body.

As JM notes Fenders Customer Services are superb at giving details against the Serial Numbers. If you email them with your situation, as above, I am sure they will come back to you promptly.

Likewise, condolences in respect of your friend. Remember him happily as you share his guitar.

Thank you for that link, jmattis! That solved it. It's a Classic 60's model. I guess I thought those were American made but I certainly can't fault the quality of this one.

What is really weird is that my late friend and I had been friends for over 30 years and regular jammers but I never knew about this Strat. He always played Les Paul's. When he widow gave it to me she said he would've wanted me to have it and since it looks as if it's never been played I'm wondering if that was his plan all along...although I told him I preferred maple to rosewood. Even so, it makes me tear up...
