This is a pretty pointless question but will the finish on the neck of my standard MIM strat (which I believe is polyurethane) wear down like the pre cbs ones? I know the finish is pretty thick so I'm just wondering what will happen after years and years of use because I can't seem to find any pictures of worn out poly necks that haven't be intentionally "relicced"
Thanks :)

With enough use, yes. Even steel bannisters wear.
The upside is that it takes longer. The downside is that you can't do spot repairs like with nitro, because fresh poly doesn't bond with old poly.

It will but, unless you have skin like sand paper, it is unlikely you will notice any change after 30 years.

Thanks, also is it likely that if I clean the fretboard regularly will that keep it from wearing down as quick or does it not matter?

You will get through many sets of frets first. It does chip off the top of the fret markers, along the edge of the frets and at the edge of the neck....after about 20 years.

It's likely that if you clean it often, it will start peeling faster. The reason being that cleaning will get some moisture down in cracks next to the frets. But it will look better, and be more comfortable to play than a dirty neck, so do it anyhow. Try to keep the rag moist, not the neck, and you'll get less moisture into the neck.
