Just about every single time for the past 6 years I've plugged my standard Mexi strat into an amp I get that awful buzz and I know it happens to everyone but I seem to get it quite a lot more than usual. A few years ago it got really bad so I got it checked out at a store and they did something to it which seemed to make the issue less frequent rather than fixing it completely. I'm wondering if it's the lead or the jack that could be causing the problem. I use the fender California series leads and have gone through about 4 in 2 years but I keep buying them because they're cheap haha. I rarely ever practice at home through an amp so I'm only plugging in about twice a week. Has anyone experienced problems like mine with either a MIM strat or a fender California lead?
Thanks

Jack or cable problems aren't rare, and there's of course the possibility that the awful buzz comes from the amp, or a pedal if you use them.
The easy diagnose system is elimination; test the signal chain with different guitar/cable/pedal/amp to find the culprit.

If the trouble was/is with the guitar jack, and you paid a shop to fix it, they should have done the job properly once and for all.

Diagnose first, then use a better pro to fix it.

you could also keep the amp volume at ONE until after you've plugged in the guitar.

Sorry I should have phrased that better... it doesn't start buzzing as soon as I plug in, it seems to happen when the plug moves ever so slightly inside the jack and I spend minutes fiddling so that the plug sits perfectly inside the jack. Also, I know it's not the amp causing the problem and it's happened on most of the leads I've used which were mostly fender California series, so it's likely that it's the jack causing the issue, so assuming that it is, can anyone suggest a solution. I've taken the jack apart and the contact tip thing seems to make full contact with the tip of the lead. Could it be a wiring problem?
Thanks :)

If you have jack problems, there's only two wires to resolder, and a high quality jack costs under a fiver...

If you want to keep the old: Is the nut holding the jack in place tightened properly? Are the solder points OK? Wires not broken? Wires neatly in place, not twisted together in a way that could cause intermittent shorts/cuts?

Agreed. One of the only mods I made to my American Special. They fit the plug perfectly - well worth the (small) cost!

Cheers - Peter.

No, funnily enough, it doesn't. Or at least, mine didn't - I use Neutrik jackplugs (on Elixir cables) and they weren't a great fit at all. The rest of the electrics look standard American, though.

Perhaps one of those areas where Fender was able to shave a few bob off the price?

Cheers - Peter.

Sounds more like a bad cable to me. The output jack is pretty stable(mounted to the guitar body, moderate tension leaf spring ) however the cable after the connector is flexible therefor bends a little to a lot. Usually cables provide a ground shield via tight mesh/woven exterior w/ the signal being sent via interior wire and when the cable bends it stresses the ground portion until it breaks. It doesn't take much to break/weaken especially when a repeated movement is involved plugging in and pulling out. When the ground is open, you get a loud hum, moving it back to a closed ground the hum stops.

I agree with sfceric64, the diagnosis isn't yet sure at all. The problem occurring with several cables ("it's happened on most of the leads I've used") would suggest the jack, though.

AmSpecial (and a lot of MIM's), part number 0047329049, "JACK PHONE 1/4 - OUTPUT - sell 049" or "Output Jack, Standard Series".
More expensive Americans, part number 0021956049, "JACK PHONE OPEN CIRCT 11" or "Fender premium quality Switchcraft 1/4″ mono jack".

If I had meant that the AmSpecial series is from Mexico, I would have written "and a lot of other MIM's".
Language barriers...

AmSpecials have US serial numbers, and they have the controlled "MADE IN U.S.A" label, but the parts are often economy priced stuff.
Before AmSpecials, there was the Highway One series with similar design/manufacturing ideas.
Those are Fender's way to offer a MIA guitar for an affordable price.

BTW, none of the above should be read as quality comparison between Fenders from different countries.

This is not a problem of language, I understood. What Fender pretends to me this guitar look more half MIM half MIA.
