I have two strats, a jaguar and a jazzmaster as well as a Gibson 335 dot. I check the neck, the string height and the bridge each time I swap strings. If the string gauge is not altered, there should be very minimal adjustments, if any, required.

Once a year I take my 40th anniv strat (the one I use the most) to a pro and let him do a new setup. After I get it back, though, I always tweek it a little.

As for changing PUPS, etc. I do that myself - all part of the joy of this sport/hobby/profession.

Once to do all the things I can't such as reshaping the nut and fret dressing (specialized tools), and then every time I check strings I give her a good clean and check the intonation, action and trem.

Ok, I get it... :)

So where's a good place for me to learn the right way to do these things?

A local guitar shop.

I used to take my Strat in once a month for new strings, not because I didn't know how to change strings, but because I didn't like to do it, and I was interested in one of the girls at the guitar shop. I'd take it to her, she'd keep it over the weekend, play it that night at a gig, change the strings Monday morning, and bring it back to me, set-up, for free.

As I got to know her better, she taught me HOW to do the set-up on my guitar, which I now do once in the spring, and once in the fall.

Basically, take it to a local guitar shop, ask if you can watch, and as you're watching, be sure to ask questions, make sure you know what's going on. It'll teach you how to do it right, and eventually, you'll be able to do it yourself.

youtube has some great videos showing how to do each part of a setup. Definately helps seeing it done rather than just reading.

By now Dan should be paying me commission on this. But once again: The Guitar Player Repair Guide by Dan Erlewine is the biggest and best thing out there. It'll last your lifetime and take you from tuning the guitar nearly to the point of building your own electrics and acoustics. Nearly.

Best spent few bucks of your guitar playing career.

Cheers - C

Alright, cool. I just happen to have a Barnes and Noble gift card from my wife lying around. :)

For general checkups and service, I would take my git to a pro when either:
a) the intonation is significantly off, or
b) a truss-rod adjustment is needed

When is that for me?? Never. After getting my git a proper setup, I never have had any quality instrument where such a correction was needed afterward. Example: For my '76 Gibson SG, I had a full setup done in 1995 (due to installing new pups and bridge). Before that, it was professionally setup back in the late '70s. Other than that, the only thing the SG ever needed was strings and a modest cleaning.

For me, the guitars I have owned that could not keep their intonation were not worth keeping. Those go bye, bye.
