Reading the "STRATOCASTER® ADJUSTMENT AND CARE" page (http://www.fender.com/support/stratocaster.php) , I realize it's pretty much beyond me. (I don't even know what automotive feeler gauges are without Googling.)

So how often is it recommended for someone who plays their guitar regularly to take it in and get fine tuned by a quality service tech?

Welcome to the Forum.

I check it myself and make adjustments if needed every time I change my strings.
If you don't do it yourself I recommend a minimum of twice a year.

Also, it might depend on what u been up to...
In winter, maybe u find yourself on stage out doors...

We played one night it was like 40 - 45 degrees out...
It was a really nice night for a winter night.
But I had to leave my guitars in the cold for a while
so that they were adjusted to the weather out there
& then tweek them a little...
It was mostly just tuning or maybe relocking down
the strings or the floyd locking nut. But somthing like
that may also inspire u to 'check' or 'get them checked'
...after they have returned to "room temperature" as well.

I'd like to be able to do some basic set up techniques myself but haven't found a very good guide yet, any suggestions?

and, just out of curiosity, if I took my guitar to an authorized fender technician, what would they do (other than a set up) for annual maintenance?

They might clean it for you.

I've always liked this site:

I also do some myself (strings, intonation, basic neck adjustments, etc). I'll take it to a specific tech I know once a year though.

Like CAFeathers, I do the "standard maintenance/setup" everytime I put on new strings: Check the truss rod, the amount of float, the string height, and intonation.

If the string gauge is consistent (as it should be between sets of a good brand of strings), then the amount of "screw twisting" is minimal.

I have guitars that I have played for over 30 years that still tune and play perfectly. As long as you don't change string gauges they shouldn't require much more than cleaning. Mine gets cleaned and new strings before every show. I'd just recommend buying string sets by the gross. A lot cheaper in the long run!

My advice is if it ain't broke don't fix it...if it is broke, leave it to a professional. A lot of times the cost to repair a botched repair is more costly then if it was done right the first time.

I do it all myself.....from changing strings until changing pickups or wiring mod.....

But every 2 years, or 1.5 years, I bring my guitar to luthier for re-fret my frets

You will satisfied if you do everything about guitar with your hands, I think...

It seems like spring and fall when the weather changes my guitars need some adjustments. If it is very minor I do it myself. If the action changes alot then I take it to a luthier. Usually mine goes in to the shop for a professional set up once a year, or every other year.

Hello Sugapablo,

Keeping my guitars in top form
is part of the fun of this hobby.

I understand the allure...it's just about trusting yourself enough not to $@!& up your beautiful instrument through a combination of ignorance and incompetence.

P.S. Hobby? Sounds much better that the word the wife and I have been using. Addiction.
