I've been using my whammy bar a lot more recently and it's getting frustrating having to quickly reach down and grab it every time I let go. I know the am standard strats come with a spring that'll keep it in place but since I don't have a spring that size I wrapped a rubber band round the thread before screwing the whammy bar in. Is this a good solution or may it damage the thread? It seems to be working perfectly so far... can anyone give me their thoughts?

Wellif it works for you why not...plastic plumbers tape would work too.
A pack of springs is reasonably cheap.
Do you pack your strat with the whammy in?
The downside is that rubber will disintegrate and leave stuff in the hole that you will want to fish out and in the process possibly damaging the inner thread. :D

Some guys place their guitar in the case with the bar still in.
I don't but it means you are not continually removing the bar.
You could always upgrade you bridge to a deluxe then no spring. :D

To me American Standard use push in tremolo arm, not screw arm.
You need a spring if you have a screw arm.

Don't waste your time, find some spring

Just think of how awesome a guitar player you could have been by now if you had only spent the last 10 years practicing instead of obsessing over pickups and roasted maple necks.
