I hear ya! to help jog my feeble memory, I record the date, brand, and what maintenance I've done on a small sheet of note paper that I leave in the case. With about 20 guitars, it's easy for me to forget some of these specifics. (then again, if I forget to update the sheet, then the whole plan goes down in flames... true story)

My take is that if the strings don't stand out enough that you know what they are by the feel, sound and looks, the name may not be worth noting down either.

Some pretty solid references there.

I find my problem with strings is, as they aren't necessarily cheap as cheap, I buy one pack to try. I then can't remember which strings are on which guitar so don't know if any particular string is better than the others.

Something I used to do and need to get back to doing is: A Notepad file on my computer listing the guitar, string change date, name of strings, guage, etc. Then notes on what I thought of the strings at the bottom of the page.

Different strings/guages react differently to different guitars.

I'm sure everyone has their allegiance - for MANY years I only used fender bullets. then I used d'addario xls.
Last year I bought a 3 pack of bullets with brass ends [the old ones were steel]. the 1st string on one of the sets failed with the string pulling out of the brass end. same thing happened in the next 3 pack. enough of that.
For the last year, I have been using the D'Addario NYXL strings [on all 4 of my strats]. I bend like crazy - 2 and 4 step bends. these work very well for me and I highly recommend giving them a shot.

For my double humbucker guitars (SG, and Les Paul) I like to use D'Addario EXL110 Nickel Wound Light (10-46) Gauge strings. They feel better for bending on the flatter 12" Radius ...and they are brighter with the Nickel wound steel, rather than the Pure Nickel I like on my Strats.

I've had that a number of times with both the brass and cast metal bullets and have also given up on them as a result.

My current favourite are Ernie Ball Hybrid Slinky as I like the 9-46 gauge range.
