Hey guys, I'm new here :)

Wondering if someone could help me tell if this is a real or fake Select Stratocaster.. any advice in general, on how to spot fakes would be appreciated too.. I have been reading on the forum on other real vs fake cases to have a general idea.

Thanks in advance!

Real.
I see no bidders at the moment but I would be surprised if it goes for that low price. Hopefully the vendor is legit :D

I'll call it real.

A Fender Select Stratocaster® HSS (017-0314-852) from 2013(ish), Tobacco Sunburst (even though the color balance in the pics is a bit off).

I won't go too deep on 'how to spot a fake'. Keep surfing the net, there is plenty of info scattered around.
On this guitar, the channel bound neck is one feature I don't think fakers have used. Yet.

Edit: Read j_j's post & checked the ebay ad. Real cheap, and I agree with the vendor oddity possibility - his/her/its alias alone is a weird choice...

Seems to be authentic.

I wonder what the reserve is......?

Reached out the seller twice and got 0 response, I won't bid unless he/she reaches back at some point. I didn't include the ebay link as I wasn't sure I was allowed to.

Good call on the channeled neck, it's probably something yet to be seen on a fake.

Thanks for the tips! If someone does bid on it and gets it home I'd love to hear about it :)

Always a wise choice.

Just think of how awesome a guitar player you could have been by now if you had only spent the last 10 years practicing instead of obsessing over pickups and roasted maple necks.

It looks real, and probably is. I haven't heard of any Select models being forged yet. I think there are too many expensive differences for the Selects to be churned out for a pittance at a backroom factory.

What I'd be more worried about is whether it's a hot guitar. If it is, and the owner and/or insurance company later manages to trace it (for example through eBay), you'll lose both the guitar and the money you paid. And you'll have supported a criminal.

As for the Select series, they are really nice guitars, and that's not just the looks. They have premium parts and materials, low weight, and far more attention paid to details than the average Fender guitar. I'd consider them a "Custom Shop Lite". They were the pride of Fender's former CEO, and when he left, the Selects were discontinued.
The biggest problem with that is that it's hard to find parts for them already, and going forward it won't be easier.

Ebay offer some type of money back guarantee though there are a few hoops to jump through for that to happen.
If it were me ( and I didnt have one already) I would take the gamble.
Funny story ..... I saw one of my guitars on ebay that I was selling elsewhere.
Photos and description lifted from my own add.
This was in the days you could contact each other.
I wrote to the only bidder telling him it was a con. He thought I was trying to scam him but I sent him proof. He never thanked me or left the vendor negative feedback.
I told ebay they weren't interested.
Next week the scammer was back only this time with another guitar.
Needless to say the next purchaser and ebay got burnt. :D

I've caught Ebay vendors peddling built-up model kits using photos of my work purloined from various enthusiast websites to illustrate their wares. A forceful note from me to the seller quoting US copyright law always results in removal of the offending pics within an hour or two. Some people are just unscrupulous.

Well it went for $1288 excluding shipping so someone may have got a pretty good deal.
I think they originally came out at around 3k but were discounted to 2k.
What sort of models Arjay?

They were around $1900-$2100 street price, and due to the early discontinuation and nothing really replacing them, many of the Selects haven't depreciated much. $1300 is a good price if in great condition.

The seller replied back a few hours before the auction's limit (uploaded higher quality images and some of the papers). I bidded but were outbidded, happy to see someone will enjoy that beauty anyway :)

Well one of those things with auctions.
Arth I think the Select series name is still alive it just takes a different form each year. This year they have the select ash tele. I know there was a select strat for 2015. Have not seen any with the channel bound board since the rosewood neck model in 2014 though. :D

The Select Strat's channeled fretboard had to be rather labor-intensive to fabricate even with the assistance of modern CNC technology. I'm not surprised that FMIC dumped the entire concept.

When it happens to me, while frustrating to loose, I take some comfort in the knowledge that I made the winning bidder pay more than he might otherwise have done.

Even if I loose there can be some satisfaction in really ramping up the price at the last minute. I may not win but I am certainly going to make the winner pay for the privilege of beating me  :-)
