Good afternoon,

I have a 2014 Fender USA Deluxe Strat with 2 N3 pickups and a shawbucker.

It works fine, but all of a sudden position 4 (middle and bridge) is acting strangely. The humbucker is working in position 4 but very quiet. I sounds almost the same as position 3.

When I go to position 5, the humbucker is fine.

Before I take it to a tech, do you have any suggestions? Does it sound like a fault with the super-switch?

Andrew

Hi there it is possible but before you do anything drastic take good photos of the layout.
Then check for adrift wires, bent switch contacts solder dags etc.
Use a screwdriver and tap the pickup poles for each position.
Sometimes just undoing the pickguard can temporarily cure such issues.
I think there is a quasi super switch combined with S1.
How is it with the S1 down position 3 on the selector.
I would depress the S1 a few times to make sure the contacts are cleaned and made.
Once past a visual inspection you then really need to check with a multimeter and this is best done with the aid of someone used to such a procedure.
Impossible to diagnose from afar but I am always a bit wary of the S1.
Hope that helps somewhat. :D

Thanks. I am handily with a multimeter and typical strat wiring. The S1 is a mystery to me. In saying that, there are no useful positions for me. I'd rather be able to have the neck and bridge combined, which I modded on my other strats.
I haven't got the guitar with me right now, but will lift the hood tonight.

Thanks for that. As it worked out, these was a faulty connection on the S1 switch. It's a complex setup under the hood. Not a fan of the N3 pickups. Very sterile. If I replace them, I'll simplify the wiring. Andrew

Have you tried varying their height? Sometimes that's all it takes to breathe new life into a set of pickups.

Sure have. They get pretty harsh up close. But in general they lack that nice Fender sparkle.

That seems to be the general consensus though there are a few owners here who like them.
