I found a squier Stratocaster 81 model in great shape. It has a maple neck. The pickups are as described. 1 powered by lace white pickup by neck also the middle pick up and tail pickup are Seymour Duncan rail custom pickups are very hot. Great sound and action. What is a fair price I should pay for this 81 model fender. I really like it. Thanks for any help.

First of all: Some first posts from new members seem to have had a real long delay before they're published (yours included) so sorry for the late answer. (& To forum moderators; a one week lag and then the post showing way low on the periodic list ain't the best possible system...)

Then to your question: An "81 Squier Stratocaster", as in 1981? Not very likely, to say the least. Give more info (original sales ad, pics and so on), someone here might be able to tell more about the guitar.

On the value, and assuming it's a Squier from some later year: the pickups upgrade doesn't really add any extra on the price. 50-300 $€£, depending on the model, condition, age and the area where it's sold. A genuine JV or E serial, maybe a little higher than that.
I know, that's not very helpful - but again, not much info to go on, either.

I think JM, while fair, could be being generous.

An old Squier? Manufacturing standards have improved so much that I think you would be better getting a new Squier. They are silly cheap new, and potentially of higher quality than on old one. I see little point in buying a used unless very cheap.

There are exceptions, as JM notes, in the Made in Japan guitars which are moving towards classic status. Greatly respected, but still a Squier, so don't get too carried away. However, a rosewood neck on an old one might be closer to rosewood than a new etc etc.

You could be buying a great guitar for the money or paying over the odds for a lemon. In many respects buying a used Squier is a much greater gamble than a used MiM or MiA as these have been more consistent in materials, craftsmanship and components over the years.

I don't think you guys are informed about the early squiers, they are much higher quality guitars than what is currently being offered. To the Op there are no 81 Squiers as the brand wasn't introduced until 1982. The site 21 Frets has a great deal of information on the early JV squiers. One thing you have to be careful about is that the specs on these vary greatly. There were some model with US pickups and steel bridges, other models with Japanese alnicos ( still good) and zinc bridges. Most should be decent quality you just have to know what you are looking at. These are pretty collectible guitars at the moment

This 82 Tele sold for over 1,000 USD
http://www.ebay.com/itm/1982-FENDER-SQU ... 7675.l2557

This strat for 900
http://www.ebay.com/itm/1983-FENDER-JAP ... 7675.l2557

SO these prices they quoted you are extremely low depending on what you have.

I've owned and played Japanese Squiers in the eighties when they were new, so how the hoff did you come to that conclusion? 8)

And for your wishful evaluation on this topic's Squier: nothing yet to convince me it's one of the more valuable Squiers...

Im operating under the assumption that it is an early Squier JV, which if it is, is certainly worth more than the 50-300 price you quoted above as evidence by the real completed/sold examples I posted above. I clearly stated that the Japanese had several different levels specs based on yen value/domestic or export destination and that the OP would really need to narrow down what he had. Sure 300 bucks is a good price for an E series or certain SQ models, but not for a JV.

and are you seriously arguing that this early JV with Fullerton grey bottoms is the same or equal as modern day budget squier? IMO, it would be more analogous to the Classic series or AVRIs

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8oVHlnxQN9A

but either way we will need pictures to determine what exactly he has, which like you said can be a vast difference in value. Im just offering that if its a proper JV, it is a neither a cheaply built or inexpensive to purchase guitar.

Your assumption is just that, it has no basis...

- The OP says the guitar is a "squier Stratocaster". Later on the post he/she/it says it's a "fender". So, based on the info we get, it could be anything (an SLO, 'Strat Like Object' is quite possible)...
- Further, we're told "it's an 81". That's impossible.
- The pickups: one Lace White, two SD Hot Rails. Absolutely not original.
- No come back from the OP.

So, no confirmation that the guitar is a MIJ.
No confirmation it's a JV, SQ, E, A (...) serial.
Actually, no confirmation it's even a Squier/Fender.

Based on my experience, mystery guitars are a lor more likely to be non-collectables than the Golden Ticket. That's the reason for my "50-300 with leeway for model/condition/age/area" evaluation.

And your "this early JV with Fullerton grey bottoms", where did that come from? Stop dreaming, start playing.
