She started out as a 2001 Midnight Wine poly painted regular old MIM strat. I wanted to make it my own. I only intended to refinish my strat, as relic guitars were never my thing.. ended up relicing as the top coat crackled my white paint basecoat. I'm pretty pleased with the results. I think I have a whole new love for relics. Also, its TREMENDOUSLY lighter. Lastly, the accessories were steel willed and soaked for days in dark coffee. What are your thoughts?

Hard to be complementary.
Sorry.
I'm sure you put a lot of time and effort into it and I wish I could say something nice about it.
The long and the short of it is ... it lacks believability, as most home-made relic jobs do.
Best to leave that sort of thing to the professionals.

On the plus side it's a really good start on a re-fin project.
Thankfully, you haven't put too many dings and chips into the wood so a re-fin is doable.

Just think of how awesome a guitar player you could have been by now if you had only spent the last 10 years practicing instead of obsessing over pickups and roasted maple necks.

Thank you for the constructive criticism. I appreciate it. I gave it a shot and I am happy with it, however, I plan to buy a sunburst alder body soon to replace it. I may refinish this or not from here. I like how light it is and for some reason, probably all in my head, it seems to play better.

Thanks again.

If you like it, that's all that really matters.

I like what you have done with the plastic.

You could consider looking at the metal with hydrogen peroxide or, I understand, a bag with some superglue is very effective at accelerating ageing/rust.

I'm afraid I'm with the others in respect of the body. It is a subject very close to my heart having just resprayed a poorly executed relic and now considering how much damage the new finish will receive .

I have spent a great deal of time considering how I hold a Strat, where it comes into contact and how it might wear as a result. I have concluded the the wear is different if the guitar had been played while predominantly seated or standing up for example.

Pick rash is also something that interests me. Some authentic old guitars do show pick rash and, and even significant damage in that area, while others demonstrate none at all. My playing style is such that, if I'd had my guitar 40 years it wouldn't have pick rash.

Something else to consider is you can't damage the paint under, or immediately adjacent to the edge of a pickguard, as the pick guard protects it. The only time this might happen is when the paint, or timber, is so damaged that the paint flakes away or is picked off in idle contemplation.

There is the type of damage which comes from being knocked and there is damage from constant rubbing. The two look distinctly different and happen in different places on the guitar. Then there are the areas where the paint has just given up the battle of trying to stick to the wood underneath and fallen or been picked off.

Unfortunately the damage on your body doesn't really represent many of these attributes and, as a result, doesn't look terribly authentic.

On the plus side you could spray over the top of what has been done and have another go at it. And you haven't done what most guitar vandals do which is rub the paint away in the lower cut away. Who plays that high up the neck so much that they wear away all the paint in the lower cut out? A pet hate of mine along with excessive pick rash. ;-)

Thank you for the information. I shall give it another go when I can sand it all back. Thanks again

Use the crackling as a learning tool and take another stab at refinning. If you want to try another relic, find pics of a naturally reliced one and try and repeat identical wear on yours.

The back looks pretty good, believable, the front being a bit over done and doesn't look natural. Overall I would say good for a first try, and an excellent learning experience. I like the "less is more" approach.

This is my first attempt. All Fender, and all like new when I started. Not quite believable, but not horrible. :|

I agree 100%. They aren't that easy to come by though as 90% or more on the Web tend not to be original instruments but those which have been reliced. The Custom Shop heavy relics are pretty solid some others less so.

Pictures of artists guitars are quite useful SRV and Rory Gallagher being two obvious candidates. Their guitars we so significantly hammered though that it is difficult to read the story they tell. If a guitar has almost no finish left it is difficult to work out how the finish came off.

At the end of the day "Less is more".

ok, I ditched the relic idea and wanted to try and refinish my strat with some seafoam green. I hope this gets better opinions. I spent a lot of time on this refinish and wanted a vintage vibe with a nice finish. I also have ordered Kluson vintage tuners and a brass block as well. I hope it gets better love. Here is a sneak peek.

Looking pretty damn sweet so far to me.

What finish have you used and will you be clear coating it?
