Hi guys!

I've done some videos A/B some renowned pickups on the market, and always wanted to see what happens between the two poles of the price range. Se here's a comparison between a stock Squier pickup (STA5N) and a Fender CS 69 PUP.

What do you think??

By the way, "Little Wing" is not my song, just in case LOL

I think listen on the web, with MP3 compression ( ?) on a cheap speaker or headphone it is a joke .

Live is a must.

Any good pu will sound better than original Squier pu.

The comparison is meaningless.

And hi to you.

As has been noted above, the medium doesn't really allow a subjective view. However, if you need a guitar for doing YouTube videos it does show that either work.

What would be more helpful is if you tell us what you think. Granted your view is your view and may not coincide with others, but it would still be interesting to hear and more informative than a YouTube video on desk top speakers.

That's a very nice piece of playing! Is that exactly how Hendrix played it, or your own interpretation?

Re p/ups, as already said, via headphones on a laptop probably isn't the best medium, but on this evidence I have to say the Squier sounds just as good to these old ears!

Cheers - Peter.

Hi guys, the comparison is what it is. Since teletransportaion i't's not available yet, i can not show you how the new pup sound live. But hey, maybe i could do two shows on a row, and you let me swap pickups in the middle, that would be better?

Instead, i did this. As every other demo in YouTube, it's mp3, and if you have cheap speakers, those are the same you use to hear everything else, so yes, all of the youtube demos might be useless to you.

I think there's a lot of Fender lovers ofended by this, and that's not my fault. I just want show what the cheapest vs the higher range price pickups sound to each other, and it's quite objective. Same guitar, exactly same amp settings.

Hope you get a Fender endorsement soon!

Is that Squire a JV or SQ model?
What amp and or pedals are you using?
What is your recording format and device's?

Otherwise, nice playing and I couldn't hear a significant difference.

The compression used for YouTube is quite significant so, even with good speakers (I run the audio from my PC through a studio monitor amp and large full range monitor speakers) you aren't going to get the full picture.

If something sounds dramatically poor then you can pick that up. But the subtleties of tone, sustain, range, volume, attack, latency and mojo just don't exist in the YouTube digital file to experience, no matter how good your system is.

I watch a great many YouTube reviews but, most often, it is the narration that provides the information not the sound quality. Think of it as a more convenient way to get an idea of a product than reading a guitar magazine. The information has no more, or less, weight than if I had read it. The value of the narration then comes down to how much you trust and respect the reviewer. This is something which builds over time. If they note aspects of a product which you have experienced yourself this is good. If their views are completely contrary to your own experience then their narration will have little credibility.

So all this said, rather than slag off peoples computers, and listening preferences, perhaps we could all learn something from your efforts if you tell us what you think.

Why would you think this? We can't really hear a difference on a YouTube clip. Are you saying you can't tell the difference in the flesh and therefore the more expensive PUP's are a waste of money?

Fender offers the Squier instruments precisely for people like yourself who cannot discern the sonic difference in pickups from those in a premium guitar to those in an entry-level model.

   Someone sure woke up grumpy today...

I was going to stay away from this wormcan, but that's just ruff, both to the instruments and the OP.
Squiers or cheaper Fenders aren't for deaf people only. The list of distinguished Squier users is quite impressive.
And, honestly, would you be able to tell the difference, blindtested, on a youtube vid?

To me, personally, IMHO and all other such affixes, that vid confirms what I've said&written before; even the cheaper Squiers do produce a typical Strat sound.

Indeed so and Squiers are often the weapon of choice in Andertons "Sound like xxxx on a budget" videos (like them or loath them) as they free up more £££££ to spend on a better amplifier.

Returning to the original premise of this thread, while we have same amp and same settings noted somewhere, we also have the variable of PUP height. If this isn't set correctly even the best PUP's can be made to sound like excrement.

I'm not so sure that artists using Squiers keep them totally stock, especially the pups. There are Squier models with better pups in them than say a Bullet model. There is a definite and discernable difference in sound between ceramic magnet pups and alnico magnet pups. Entry level Squiers, and MIM Standard Strats have the ceramic pups.

What exactly are the pups in the Squier in this comparison?

Now there's another can of worms.
I agree that ceramics and AlNiCos typically sound different - although very few of us can recognize in a blind test which ones are used (you & I didn't, on this vid...), so the definite and discenible remains a bit questionable.
But the 'better/worse' you're (at least sort of) inclining to is a matter of taste. There are some very highly appraised ceramic pups out there.

And as a BTW/PS, artists using those 'superior' MIA Fenders also have a habit of personalizing/modding their instruments, just as much as the Squier users...

That old Eric Johnson, he's a boy! Not even happy with what you can get and even changes the way the switch is wired. These pro players, do they know nothing? He would have been much better off with a Squier. What does he know? I bet that Eric Clapton and Jeff Beck use standard Squiers. What!!??? They don't !!!!!???? Are they stupid, they would be much better off listening to someone who hasn't made more money than he can spend in a life time playing guitar.
