Hello

I just bought a Fender Stratocaster MiJ Silver Series, I got it for 200 USD, so it was very cheap... according to the serial it is a 1993-1994 guitar. While looking for some extra info on the web apparently all the silver series are Squier and not Fender, however the guitar I bought is branded as a Fender not as a Squier, does someone know if this is an authentic Fender? Were there Silver series Fender branded strats produced during that timeframe? Any help will be appreciated.

I'm pretty sure fender made the silver series guitars to compete with the Korean made cheap guitars which were getting really popular. Both fender and squier made them but I highly doubt that squier would use fenders logo and sell the guitars as fender when they are in fact squiers. If it says fender on the headstock then it is a fender. the overall quality of Japanese fenders are about the same as squiers so it doesn't really matter. Hope this helped!

My understanding is that the Japanese guitars are generally very good, based on the comments of those who have or still own them; even to the point they are becoming sought after and their second hand prices are escalating. I don't have any Japanese Strats but the Japanese guitars I do have are of the best quality for price point I have seen.

I further understand that Squier production moved to Korea in 1985 so that would suggest a 1993 Japanese Strat isn't a Squier.

I tend to agree that $200 was something of a bargain.

Thanks for replying guys... I've been playing the guitar for a month and a half now and I have to say I'm very happy with it. I would even recommend to try a MiJ Strat if you have the chance.

For $200 it was a pretty good deal!

Have a nice Jam.

I own an MIJ 1968 reissue and the quality of build is miles ahead of most Squiers and MIM's

Any ID'ing is impossible with the info given. Plenty and good pics (overall and all details, preferably also some autopsy pics of the neck heel/pocket and electronics).

I'm not aware of any Silver series Japanese Strat confirmed to be a legit Fender, but I've seen too many with the original Squier label replaced with a fake Fender one. The neck pocket/heel stamps could solve this - and if the body is wood fiber, it's a Squier for sure.
{BTW to John Sims; AFAIK, Squier Silver Series Stratocaster was still on the Japan menu in 1993. Those were the SST model(s), which might show in the neck pocket stamp.}

IMHO: The 200 you paid is low if it's a real Fender, a bit on the high side but not a robbery for a Squier. You can choose to provide us with pics & more info if you want to solve the mystery, or just forgittaboutit and play on, play LOUD.

There are some periods (the first production years) when a MIJ from the production line could get either label.
But later times, the difference became very clear and significant. Squiers were made cheaper (materials, components, finishing level). On the other end, the Fender "reissues", EXTRADs, "signatures"/collectors/customs/limiteds and so on were as good as any of their US equivalents, including the CS models.
(I use "reissue" in brackets, because that was never an official MIJ model description. About the same on "signature"; Fender Japan made some official ones, but there were many which were signatures without the artist's name.)

That's so naive it's almost cute. All counterfeiters will give a standing ovation. :wink:
