I found a strat in a pawn shop that is stamped v056422. It appears to be a 56 model with heavy heavy relic work on the fingerboard/back of neck, and body. I'm unable to find a model that this fits with. The models I find with heavy relic are custom shops. I tried to call fender but of course they are closed today. Anyone know of a heavy relic guitar that came out in the American vintage series or are there custom shops with this serial number ?

To provide further detail it may not be a 56 American vintage yr. it could be 54/56/57 not sure. I provided a similar relic model add someone has on eBay. The model I am looking at has similar relic on the back of the neck as the one in the add. It also has relic on the finger board and body. The body is relic is heavy (wish I took a picture). The price being asked here is much higher than the standard AV model. I was not sure if there was a 3-4 thousand dollar AV offered. Granted that's ebay and anyone can sell for whatever they think they can get. Below is the similar add

Note that the Stratocaster depicted in the Ebay listing is in fact a '54 model, characterized by the "miniskirt" control knobs, the "football" switch tip, the bakelite pickup covers, the round string tree, and the ash body. The ash body continued through to the '56 model year but the knobs, switch tip, pickup covers, and string tree were changed to the more familiar type by 1955.

That info is very helpful in nailing down which year it is. I guess my question though is ...was there a production model under the American Vintage models that was a relic ? All the relic models (other than the eBay model shown) are custom shops. Would you happen to know what yr these models were made (or named ).

Custom shops of this type generally start with an R.
It is possibly a vintage with the relicing after market maybe ask the vendor or email consumerrelations@fender.com with the serial.

+1

It's my understanding that the regular re-issues all received a "V" serial stamped on the neck plate. However that relic was created (and by whom), it's a very convincing replica.

"...Every single part has been relic to perfection..." Duh! I think I'd be considering a respray :-) And isn't it so upsetting when you wear through the lacquer beyond the last fret?

Swinging into the vandalised quadrant for me.

I would be very nervous of purchasing such a beast as the body and neck could be from absolutely anything and the source of the various parts is also completely unknown.

At half that that price it might be worth a punt but otherwise I would pass personally.

[Edit] Sorry, I re read the thread. My comments were in respect of the Ebay offering not the original post.

The vendor has a 100% positive feedback rating and asserts that the guitar was built by Fender in 2013.

I doubt that there's any attempt at deception with the listing.

I have every confidence that is what the original owner told the vendor.

And I am sure that ties up with the number of the neck plate. The neck looks right by specification and I guess it had to come from somewhere. It also wouldn't be difficult to check the body for extraneous screw holes. I am perhaps being a little over cautious.

Either way (and probably because I'm not feeling the vandalism) I don't see the value.

There's certainly no harm in that. I've seen a lot of folks disillusioned after making what they thought was a bargain that turned out to be a scam. "Caveat Emptor" should always apply.

I am still awaiting fenders reply on the serial number I have provided.

Again I'm not looking at the guitar listed on eBay. It is just the only one I have found that is a relic and an American vintage (not a custom shop).

The guitar I am looking at has a v------- serial number and a relic job.

Something I just noticed is this pick guard has a crack and is held together by a washer near the bridge. I am wondering if the relic I was seeing is just years of wear now. Fender advised me the numbers on the guitar indicate that it is older than 93. That's all I really got.
