I own an 07 Eric Johnson Strat. It's my favorite one, even more than one built from the ground up a couple years before (well, I milled the body myself, yr neck Warmoth made, pickups mojotone, etc). Matter of fact, with the exception of the neck which i reprofiled (not exactly, it's the same profile, just .30" smaller),it's the only one that's still stock.

I played one of the rosewood models s friend owns and loved it. I know many don't like the binding, I really dig it though . However the attack was much more immediate than I'd expect from a rosewood fretboard, much more like the maple than I expected it to be.
I looked up the specs, and see they describe it as "laminated rosewood fretboard." I don't know what to make of that. Do they mean laminated as in the way Gibson has done them in the past: stacking a few thin pieces of rosewood until it's the normal thickness of a typical slab rosewood fretboard. Or do they mean that it's essentially a maple neck/fretboard that's been made just slightly thinner, and they put a thin piece of rosewood over it? So is it like a rosewood veneer over a maple fretboard?

With a gut feeling, I'd say it's just a question of laminated/veneer fretboard vs slab board; the former has the curved bottom and the latter the flat bottom. Here's the 101 on the subject plus a nice explanatory pic: viewtopic.php?f=6&t=58705
So on the 'truly' part, it's probably not 'truly Brazilian Rosewood' (CITES etc.) but probably 'truly rosewood'. A bit hard to verify, though, with that binding...

On the way that EJ Strat felt to you, just embrace the feeling, without overanalyzing it to binding, rosewood thickness, radius, fret size - or the paint left out between the trem plate & block...

Laminated is referring to the fretboard shown on the right.
The one on the left is known as a slab board.
The lam board is still a solid piece of timber.
If it says Rosewood in the description it will be Rosewood.
