One of my favorite gripes....MIA Artist Series guitar nothing like stage guitar visually except for powerplant; MIM Standard Artist Strat is white on black..generic pattern...nothing like actual stage guitar's...MIM pups....;
Now we see him pictured, more often than not, with a black on white, (which I like better )and, I would bet, is not available other than on special order as would be a polka-dot 'real thing'.....which.....speaks to the age old proverb:

"You can please some of the people some of the time, some of the people all of the time, but not all of the people all of the time!"

At least we have a place to vent!!

As for those of you waiting for the Gilmore....better luck!

Doc :P

Do I remember right - don't you have a Buddy Guy, Doc? What are the specs on that one? Was it a CS, or factory?

Feel free to discuss at length...

(See what I did there, guys)

Good memory. I did....and I discussed it else-where (hyphenated with a nod to you). I ordered it the year it was first offered and swapped out the stock pups for DiMarzio Heavy Blues. It, and my Clapton, were traded up to my hero's tribute CS which has been described several times.

It was a nicely done MIM and played well, but GAS held sway over me and so I consolidated all my eggs in to what I considered would be an all around expression of all my heroes...i.e. A Clapton, finished like an SRV including fretboard and gold hardware, with all black plastic, and SCN pickups. Only shortcoming was the neck profile which we have beaten to death else-where was not the same as my Clapton. They actually sent me a C-neck the first time, and it had to go back to CA for replacement. So it came back, without the satin finish, and, having already waited 18 months for it, chose not to send it back again.

In retrospect I do deeply regret having let the Clapton go. I actually acquired it used, in nearly mint condition, and kept it so but, unlike Stratoholic or Alain, whose collections are to be admired, I, unfortunately, CAN have too many guitars. Thus, I have three high quality, high end representatives of some of the best the industry has to offer, and I MUST be satisfied.

But the opportunity to have a white polka dot (like the one on the website, fitted with gold lace sensors, a preamp, vintage gold hardware, and a Clapton neck, just might knock me off the wagon.). Even stock, I might go for it.

I would bet that design I just described would go for $5K minimum, Masterbuilt.

Doc

That polka dot certainly is a very handsome instrument - and in this incarnation highly attainable, too. The stock pickups confuse me a little...? I like Sensors: I'd make that switch (against Forum ethics).

Yup: I'm not usually much interested in the Sig thing, but I could make an exception for that one.

Or for a Pete Townshend wine red "number 1" LP, for that matter. I had a very formative experience crushed against the front of a stage peering between Pete's monitors for three hours about six feet in front of that very guitar, right at the end of its career, late '79.

But that's a whole different website forum. Aplogies for straying...

Cheers - C

Having witnessed the last American performance of 'Tommy" at NYC's Metropolitan Opera House, more years ago than I care to remember, I
can sympathize with your loss of hearing.

Go into the Buddy Guy link in the article on the website. Bring up the photo of Buddy and guitar (bottom row, left center). Compare polka dot pattern with that of MIM; note white pup covers compare w/MIM. I would suppose this is the commemorative guitar with the engraved back plate they show being held up in the article.

Hey California....don'tcha know yet that Fender geeks see all, know all, and question everything.........

Doc

FYI: The first time I ever saw that finish (which is at least two years now) I coined the term "Dalmation" for it. I have referred to it as such in my availability inquiry of Fender this morning. If Fender picks it up as their own, you heard it first here.

Last time I saw Buddy play, he had the Black one with White dots onuntil he broke a string, then the white one with black dots until the guitar tech got the string on. I think he even changed the guitar out in the middle of a song. That tells me his black one is his baybee.

The pickups are the key as is the dot pattern. The pickups are lace sensors. The dot pattern is custom for his stage guitar and nothing like the production version.

Somebody out there, I believe, owns a white on red. I thought I saw it in the background on one of the photos in the thread Chet Feathers started.

Just been watching Jeff Beck playing with classical violinist Nigel Kennedy as part of the bbc proms series. Doc your completely right Jeffs actual guitar bares no resemblance to the fender artist series, even the roller nut is completely different. I hate to think what it would be like when you got under the hood on a side by side comparison.

There you go.....these guitars are often just a nod to the artist. Some are close, but no cigar.

Hence....with the new Gilmour, it should be interesting to see what they have come up with.

Just as an aside, the musician who played all of Dave's solos during the concert I attended this weekend never touched that trem bar once. A very staple means of musical expression for Dave, that trem, and not once, by someone seeking to dime his sound.
