WHAT WILL HAPPEN???? An uncontolled fusion reaction, resulting in life as we know it coming to an end on earth.

Or else, nothing. There ain't no rules in guitar repair. Try it & find out. Just make sure the wiring is correct before you plug it in the amp.

Have you (original poster) made the switch?

Did anything happen?

How do you like it?

What is different?

500k volume pot and 250k tone pots is a common after-market setup for a strat.

In fact, my friend has it on one of his strats. I do not like to play his as much as I like to play mine for this reason:

I rely heavily on my volume knob because I play through a tube amp. I.E. I keep my amp cranked up high, and I turn the volume on my guitar lower (say 3 or so..) when I need clean tones and up higher when I want some (5-6 or so) crunch. 7 and UP when I really want some distortion.

Overall, I have a LOT more control between 1-10, which is what a pot with 250k ohms will give you versus a 500k pot. Going to a 500k pot will give it what seems like more warmth but you will lose all of the fine tuning in between 1-10, so you will have to turn the knob more to notice any differences, yet 10 isn't necessarily going to be any louder.

That is just my 2 cents, I am no expert, and modifying guitars is mostly user preference anyway. There is nothing mechanically wrong with using a 500k ohm pot for volume and 250k for tone.

That has also been my experience with 500K pots in Gibson-type, two humbucker guitars. I just don't like the lack of volume control with them. I have never heard a good explanation of why it is, however. I assumed it was due to the difference between the humbuckers and the single coil pickups, but I suppose the pot could be the problem, though I don't fully understand why.

Cheers.
