OK .. got to Texas on Tuesday .. enlisted my bud Bob .. aka the "Mad Guthier" .. aka the "King of DYI" (restoring a Red '62? Rambler soft top was a crowning achievement of his) ..

You would remember it .. if you spent time on Music Row in Nashville back in the 90's ..

Luckily his tools were handy .. even if the work bench wasn't .. instead a stack of Gtr Cases on a chair sufficed .. and we went to work ..

It took both heads .. all 4 hands .. and a willingness to leap into the darkness .. VOILA

Gotoh SD91mt Locking/staggered Tuners .. the degree of difficulty was pretty high because the bushings aren't the screw on style .. therefore they tended to wiggle in 3 Dimensions!

Nice & Straight .. the old screw holes are barely visible .. next up is the electronics .. shouldn't take more than a month of Sundays : )

Thank You .. it will do for my use .. I see imperfections that a proper set up (Drill Press/Bench/Vise) would have helped overcome .. but I'm an amateur looking for Tone & Playability ..

Now I have a decision .. the previous owner decided to ground the Pups the standard way .. running wire from case to case .. the EJ scheme used contact with the pickguard shield ..

Any opinions?

The EJ standard wiring looks a lot tidier, but the existing wiring will be fine.
It all depends on your OCD.
I'd be inclined to leave it as is, screw the pickguard down, and forget about it.

Yup .. I agree .. although my OCD can get pretty high (oops!) it's all about that Bass .. (& the Mids & Trebs) .. It won't add to the output resistance load ..

So they stay ..

But .. tMG thought a removable connection to the output jack would be helpful in the future .. hmmm .. and how about running the "trem ground" off the output jack for Really Easy servicing .. Sooo

Now the pickguard can be removed and reattached completely from the guitar without soldering/snipping! Time to assemble this Mommadukey ..

Whenever I'm under the hood of any guitar, I usuall get rid of the ground loops, which is what the wires from pot to pot are. The shield connection is just fine, but even better than the foil shield is an aluminum pick guard shield.

Ah-Hah .. why do you discard ground loops .. unsightly?

Is that one of those full size PG Shields? Why do you think it's better?

I used a full size shield in a build .. hard to tell if it reduced hum .. but that's why I did it ..

In an unshielded guitar, when there are multiple options for ground, extraneous noise can occur.
Outside sources can induce slight currents.

Really, the pick guard shield does little-to-nothing for noise reduction due to any shielding (covering the control cavity is the only good), but it does provide a better connection for the pots than the thin foil does. All of the grounds should connect to the case of one of the pots, and the connections from one pot case to another creates a ground loop which can intoduce noise, that is why those connecting wires are to be eliminated.

Good stuff .. thanks shimmi ..

It's put together and it IS Noisy .. since it's so easy to remove the PG I'll snip those extra wires ..

Just to be sure .. all pup grounds to one case (Vol pot) .. no ground loop .. establish secure connection between pot cases & PG shield ..

Currently a ground wire runs from Vol pot to the Output jack & from the Output jack to the trem claw .. is that OK?

:?
