   I could use some experienced advice now .. before I drill 7 new screw holes for tuners ..

Problem is not having a drill press .. just a hand held .. poorly balanced battery op no less ..

Critical Error or No Problemo? Fixing a screw up would be a huge pita!

It's too nice a neck to mess it up .. Quartersawn Curly Maple w/Macassar Ebony fb ..

If you're drilling holes in a virgin headstock, a drill press is mandatory for precision results.

Those who will tell you different don't have their dog in that fight.

I just had this done by a professional. Cost me 50 bucks tuners installed. Or you could do it yourself, what could possibly go wrong?

Depends on the professional. Seriously.

Cheers - Peter.

It's not difficult with the right tools but, unless you are completely confident with your DIY abilities, find a good luthier.
Drill press isn't necessary, I use a pin vise and 2 slightly different size drill bits for Gotoh screws because they are usually not fully threaded and have a plain shank. It is so easy to snap tuner screws when tightening into hard maple and removing the broken bit can be a nightmare. Soap or candle wax should be used to lubricate the threads to help prevent breakage.

+1000!

I'm a big time DYI guy, but I would not take a chance on messing up a quartersawn neck.

I do want precision .. if the HS cracks or they're not quite straight I'd be disappointed

Right? That's the kind of thinking that got me here ...

Well said .. triple the cost for NJ rates .. halve the expectations of quality workmanship .. how I miss Martian

Oh How True Peter ..

What it comes down to is whether I have more confidence in a "professional" or myself ..

Maybe I can rent a drill press ...

Actually, you can rent a drill press where I live, but hiring a luthier would be cheaper. Plus you have someone to blame if it is f^^ked up, which I doubt would happen with someone you trust.

If you do it yourself, run the drill in reverse, makes for a cleaner cut and less likely to chip the wood.

Good advice for the Headstrong types .. like me ( :

Especially with this finish .. Warmoth's Vintage Tint Gloss tends to chip pretty easily ..

INVENTION OPPORTUNITY
I see all kind of Hand Drill jigs for Peg Holes and Pin Mounts (3x3, 6 inline, slotted, etc.) but None for setting Vintage Screw Holes? ...

I'm feeling like it ain't that big a deal ..
Screw hole placement is already measured & marked .. 1/16" & 5/64" bits are out .. I've got some wooden toothpicks & Titebond wood glue .. just in case ..

I've already reamed the Peg Holes for press fit Bushings (& built two PH back up with cryo glue) .. that reamer was $2.99 at Harbor Freight tools & worked just fine ...

You talked me into it you Silver Tongued Hoosier!
