After an almost 60 year hiatus, I have started playing again. I purchased a Strat and the new Pro series Fender case, and have two questions which I really need help with.

1. This is my first Strat, my first Fender, and my first guitar with a tremolo. When I screw the bar in, it is very loose until it gets snug - and my question is, how tight do I screw it in? Can I damage it by making it too tight? Can I strip the threads, etc.?

2. When I put the guitar in the case, shutting the lid compresses the tremolo. Does it damage anything to do this? Right now, I unscrew the tremolo and store it in one of the accessories spots inside the case.

I don't think I am being overly cautious here - I have waited a LONG time to actually own a Strat, and I DARNED sure do not want to damage it in any way!

Thanks, guys -

Thigtend just enough to keep the arm stay in place when you play

Remove tremolo arm, put piece of tape on the hole to not loose the spring

Any bolt ( tremolo arm have threads like bolt ) should never be thighten too much.

Enjoy your guitar

Sounds as though the spring is missing from the hole? If it's there, you should screw the bar int until there's sufficient friction to hold it in whatever position you leave it in - don't screw it in as far as it will go, or you'll compress the spring too much and risk damaging it.
If it's not there, you can buy springs (usually in packs of 12) from reputable dealers. I put Vaseline on the Spring, makes it stay in the hole better, but it's a good idea to stick a piece of tape (blue painter's tape for instance) over the hole when you remove the bar.

2. When I put the guitar in the case, shutting the lid compresses the tremolo. Does it damage anything to do this? Right now, I unscrew the tremolo and store it in one of the accessories spots inside the case.

You're doing the right thing - remove the bar and tape the hole (as mentioned above).

I don't think I am being overly cautious here - I have waited a LONG time to actually own a Strat, and I DARNED sure do not want to damage it in any way!

Usual disclaimers apply......IMHO, YMMV etc.

Yep don't pack your guitar with the trem arm in.
I know people who do it but you risk damaging the finish.
With the screw in style arm there is, as mentioned , a spring in the bottom of the hole. It is easy to lose. When you tighten the arm this presses against the spring to keep the arm in place. :D

It is so much easier not to use the trem at all ;-)
