It's an early American Standard that someone has not been kind to. The E4 does not indicate an 84 build in this case. It's probably 1987.

Agreed. When Fender changed hands in 1985 there were a lot of pre-printed headstock decals with "E4" serial number prefixes (and even some left-over E3/1983 decals) - the CBS Standard and Elite models that used those decals turned out to be really slow sellers. The new owners of Fender, FMIC, wound up using those left-over headstock decals on the American Standards when they were introduced at the end of 1986/start of 1987. Actually the "E4" decals were not used up until about the middle of 1988, when they finally "change over" to "E8" decals.

Also the OP mentioned the stickers on the pickups - it looks like the original pickups were replaced by Duncan SSL-1 pickups, which are a fairly vintage-style pickup.

Yep, that's "artificial relic" for sure. And not very well executed, but that's how I feel about most "artificial relics". Check the neck finish, no amount of playing will produce a worn/unworn seam like that near the headstock end...

I agree with your comments regarding the body. As you may have noticed from previous posts I am very sensitive about relics telling a story which could be believable. This fails dramatically and the sanding on the horn just looks silly.

The neck doesn't cause me an issue with the likes of EC and others sanding the finish off the back of the neck. I would consider that a legitimate story.

+1

As artificial as Tammy Faye Bakker's make-up (before she assumed room temperature).

And that's why the E5, E6, E7 serial MIA's should always raise one's eyebrows...

I'm not against neck matting/snading per se, whether it's done to improve playability or to get a relic look.
My personal opinions of ersatz antique set aside, I just meant the execution of it in this guitar is almost an insult to woodworking traditions/skills/etc. If one fakes, one should fake well.
