Hi, I am new here and have what may seem like a silly question.
I recently bought a mexican stratocaster on ebay, candy apple red, special edition. I believe it is a 2004-2005 model. It hasn't even arrived yet, but i have been puzzled about the picture of it on ebay. IT shows three volume buttons , no tone, just volume buttons. It's possible that someone took off the tone buttons and installed volume buttons i guess. Does anyone know of a stratocaster , mexican or whatever with these features.
Thanks

Welcome and congrats on a fine choice of guitar to buy!

I think it's inevitable that the knobs have in fact, been changed (or at least, the lower two). No big deal though, if all three reading volume annoy you, getting two tone knobs are cheap enough to replace and readily available.

One thought though: I'm wondering if the previous owner rewired the guitar so that those three buttons (as you call them) are in fact, a volume control for each pickup and the guitar doesn't have a tone control.

Not saying your guitar is like this but It sounds like a good modification.
imagine it 5 position toneswitch like the esquire's 3 possition, and 3 pickups always on with 3 individual volume controls, one for each pickup.
could you imagine the plethoria of sounds, neck on 10 with bridge on 6 and all that stuff. If your guitar is anything like that post me pictures of the wiring o.k.

That's not so farfetched of an idea.

And didn't EVH's Frankenstrat use a "Tone" knob on his volume control?
So there's a famous precedent for mis-marked knobs!

I found the auction in eBay. The guitar is an 04 MIM 'special edition'. Auction says guitar is all original. Okay, forum experts, give us the low down.

IMO, it is a Special Edition due to the color ONLY. As to it being ALL original, unless the 3 volume knobs were a mistake at the factory (which I HIGHLY doubt), it is not.

hey guys, just got a reply from the guy I purchased the guitar from, here is his version.
Dear bluestoo

Hello Gary, man...I never even noticed there were 3 "volume" printed knobs on there...There are not 3 volume pots though...just incorrectly printed knobs...If you don't like that they have "volume" printed on them, mail me back two of the knobs and I will send you 2 "tone" printed knobs to replace them....Sorry for the oversight...it just never occured to me to check them...Regards, Jim

Well, that's nice to know what it actually was. That would have been my guess, but wiring the knobs for individual pickups would have given you some interesting possibilities in terms of tone. Either way, great choice on the guitar! Love the color too.

We're all waiting to learn what kind of 'player' your new acquisition turns out to be. If you yourself are not able, have a very competent tech go over and set this one up for you.

Hey doc,
yeah, I am not a very competent tech myself, so will be taking it to mylocal guy for the grand setup. Also want my acoustic setup changed up at the same time. I will keep all informed. Sounds like a very informed and experienced bunch here.
cheers/ Gary

........from all walks of life and a knowledge base in music, its technology, and all things Fender which will boggle your mind. Also, a very congenial, and caring group reflected in the response to the recent health issues affecting two of us.

With respect to your acoustic, it is very important that your tech be knowledgeable. We recently had a horror story posted by one of our members regarding the competence of a vendor he was a patron of.
