I recently purchased a new American Vintage guitar from my local dealer and have a question about which model it actually is. Up until I started reading The Fender Stratocaster Handbook, I thought it was an American Vintage ’70s Stratocaster. In the book there is an article about a 2005 USA-made ’74 Vintage Reissue, Serial No. V00938. The reason for my confusion is because the color, Sunburst; which is not listed in the current Fender catalog and the serial number of my guitar is V00914.

Did I purchase a 2005 ’74 reissue and is it still considered an American Vintage?

Do you have a link or anything?

I'd like to see a '74 Vintage Reissue (I could compare it to my vintage '74).

orvilleowner- The only place I’ve seen any reference to the ’74 Vintage Reissue is in the book The Fender Stratocaster Handbook (by Paul Balmer). I can’t find any links on the web that show anything other than the cover of the book. When I first started reading the article, I initially thought; maybe in 2005 Fender marketed the American Vintage 70’s Stratocaster as the ’74 Vintage Reissue. Also, if the serial numbers are that close they must have been manufactured about the same time (maybe the same day).

It’s been years since I played or followed any of the manufacturers, and I had hoped one of the older guys on the forum, would remember if there was a change in the model name (or if this was a different model); my previous Fender was a ’67 Coronado.

I don't find any evidence of a '74 Vintage Reissue on the web: no reviews at Harmony-Central, never saw one for sale at any etailer. Are/were there any for sale at eBay (I'm not a user)? The closest model is the Japanese-made '72 Reissues.

So either that's a typo in the book, or it was a very limited FSR run (which got bought out and disappeared under beds).

The normal '70 Vintage Reissues seem to be modeled after rare transition guitars: they have the "new and improved" bullet truss rod and three-bolt micro-tilt, but the "old style" bridge (instead of the "new and improved" one-piece bridge and cast saddles). I say "rare" because I don't know if I've ever seen an actual stock '71 or '72 with those specs!

A '74 strat would not have the vintage style trem/saddles, but would have staggered pickup pole pieces.

orvilleowner- Thanks for all the help (and the history lesson), the book must have listed the model in error.
