In excellent condition.

I was wondering what its worth?

This is my first American Strat.

Is this sometimes wrongly called an American Standard or are they two different models?

1987-1999 this model series was called American Standard Stratocaster,
2000-2007 it was just American Stratocaster (that's in the service diagram) but often called American Series Stratocaster (that's the brochure/marketing lingo),
2008-2016, American Standard Stratocaster again.

And now they bring us the American Professional series...

There were some changes/revisions/upgrades in different year models, but this is the 'reference speaker' of Strats.
And congratulations, that's a very nice 011-7400 with the 0054014500 body. 8)

Yes, 700.00 with a non original case.

I had a chance to purchase a newer 2016 Standard for about the same amount. Would it have been better to get the newer model?

IMO Standard 2016 is a Mexican made guitar, not USA made like the American Standard you bought wich is a better deal.

While the "Standard" is MIM, it wouldn't sell for anywhere near $700, not even new. If the 2016 was an American Standard, then I would go for that over the 2001, as the 2016 has Fat 50s pups.

Both guitars that I referred to in this thread are made in USA.. an elderly grandmother bought the 2016 and decided she didn't like it after barely playing it.. It was in brand new condition and came with the fender gig bag..

If the 2016 came with a gig bag it might have been an American Special instead of an American Standard - and $700 is not a good used price on an American Special as they have an MAP of $999 and typically have a street price of around $850 brand new. Did the 2016 have the large headstock and a 6-screw tremolo, or did it look pretty much like the 2001 you bought?

The 2001 is a nice looking Strat by the way, and it sounds like you got a good deal on it.

You got a really nice guitar at a good price. Don't worry over what might have been just get on and enjoy what you have. Either way, life will be full of guitars which got away.

If we say the other one would have been a better deal that still doesn't mean yours wasn't a good deal, it just means you will be annoyed with yourself. If we say you got the better guitar for the money that still doesn't change the actual guitar you bought.

Guitars are very strange things as we often form a bond with them. That bond can be broken over the smallest of things and may never be recovered. Don't go looking for reasons not to like a guitar just enjoy it for what it is.

+1!

Ignore these words of wisdom to your detriment.
