I recently bought a new Stratocaster FSR American Standard 60th Anniversary in 'Mystic Aztec Gold'. Sadly, I had a slight accident and marked it slightly, but the dent isn't amenable to repair so I'm having it refinished by my local luthier. But where can I source a gold paint nearest to 'Mystic Aztec Gold'? I've tried Fender Support but they can't help - company policy? I also would need to source it in the UK as such materials can't be shipped inter-country.
'Aztec Gold' metallic paint is available from a UK supplier called Dartford, but I think the 'Mystic' indicates Fender put extra sparkle in this particular finish, which can be seen here in a demo of this model:-

Any hints and tips gratefully received!

Unless the dent is really bad, I'd suggest rather leave it as is than refinish. Natural relic vs. refinish...

On the color coding and sparkle specs, when even Fender can't/won't help, I guess it's up to the luthier/guitar tech to get it right. That is (at least should be) part of his/her/its craft skills; about the same situation as when patching a finish that's faded and nowhere near the color in the new jar - only this one's more difficult.

Ditto. It's your dent so it is your story. If you get it refinished, and pristine, what happens if you do it again, or will you always be anxious that the guitar might get damaged again? There is actually something very liberating about having a guitar with a few knocks and blemishes. At the end of the day it is just a tool to make music and I think they do it better if you aren't worrying that they might get scratched.

Any competent luthier should be able to get a good match.

Having said that, I agree with the other opinions on here. I'd only had my Special about a month when a small chip in the lovely surf green paint appeared near the bottom strap button. I wasn't pleased but I can't be bothered to have it repaired (although I have a very good luthier) as I'm sure it'll get more damage than that in my stewardship!

I did originally have a look round for a Humbrol enamel or similar, to touch it up, but couldn't find a good match either.

Cheers - Peter.

Thanks guys.
I want to keep it pristine because I have a guitar collection of 20+ and this is one of the many I don't gig.
My luthier is still using his contacts in the trade to try and find a close match; failing which I'll go for the Dartford 'Aztec Gold'.
Fingers crossed!

It's your guitar, of course, so proceeding is your choice.

But, "keep it pristine" for what..?
If you're thinking about value, an original with a dent may be more valuable than a refinished one with "perfect" paint - neither of those is 'mint'. Plus, a refin like this ain't cheap.

Check the fingernail polish section for a close match...Apply, Let it dry, then reapply/dry, cover w/ a good clear thin/fast super glue. And you're done for under $10.

I agree 100%. If you want it as part of a collection surely it has to be original?

If you are dead set on repair why not try a car repair company like Chips Away. They may only repair the chip/dent and leave the rest original. They also mix the colours to match so it might work.

I would be stunned if Aztec Gold (the paint you found) is the same as Mystic Aztec Gold. There are thousands of paint manufacturers and they all have names for their colours. What are you going to call gold? Old Gold sound rubbish but Aztec Gold sounds awesome. And metalic paint is so variable as, not only do you have the pigment colours you have the size, density, colours and mix of the flakes. And that ignores the lacquer clear coat, which may not be clear. It isn't going to match and Fender won't tell you what the paint is as, probably, they now can't match it either.

I still think it would best be left. It is damaged, it will never be undamaged.

And metalic/metal flake finishes are an absolute swine to match. The exact same paint can look different subject to who sprays it, it has something to do with how the particals land or something.

Personally I'd leave it exactly as it is and look out for an original replacement which isn't damaged.

The horse has bolted on this one and a refinish isn't bringing it back.

Or..get another body and spray that Dartford Aztec Gold. That way you will still have the unadulterated original body and you can have a shiny pristine gold one hanging on your wall. You won't have devalued the original and can still sell it as original if you find a better replacement.

Fine art in private collections often isn't the picture on the wall, it is a copy of the original lurking in some vault somewhere. Your copy of a Mystic Aztec Gold body will be no less legitimate as you own the original.

Any chance you will post a picture of the actual damage?

No, it's still with the luthier/guitar builder who's using his industry contacts to try and arrive at a best match.
Many thanks everyone for all the helpful comments and suggestions, I appreciate it.

There's always a nuclear option, like having ThePaintedPlayer give it their Billy Corgan finish, which they've just started offering:-

Just to close this one, the luthier did a terrific job. It took him some time to get the match but he eventually did, visiting a motor car custom paint specialist. I'm very pleased with the results. Here's a couple of pics. The first was taken with a mixture of artificial and natural light, the other two with just natural light:-
