Hello,

I need some informations about a Stratocaster, it's a Fender Yngwie Malmsteen Signature model, the serial number behind the neck is : US13088032

It's a black strat with white pickguard and YJM Fury pickups and maple neck. (there is no YJM logo on the pickups)
The problem is the color, black... i never saw this color on a Malmsteen signature USA model before so i wanted to ask you if it is a legit guitar or not ?
Did Fender released any black Malmsteen strat with white pickguard and YJM Fury Pickups in 2013 or 2014 ?
I know there's some black and sonic blue models made in Japan in the 90's but in USA it's always either Olympic White or Candy Apple Red...

A guy is selling this guitar and i'm interested in it but i don't know if it's a legit model or a legit neck with a standard Fender body... the link with the photos are here : http://fr.audiofanzine.com/guitare-sc/f ... 24862.html

Thank you

There used to be a CAR and Sonic Blue US versions around 2006 - and the white is Vintage (yellowish), not Olympic (greyish).

But like you and sfceric64, I'm not aware of a black Yngwie signature - US or Japan.

The neck looks very much as it should (scallop style, 12th fret dots, nut etc.) but I'd check the serial number via consumerrelations@fender.com before purchase - better safe than sorry.
Fury's can be bought from SD, and able hands do funny things, so I'm not yet convinced by the body.

I've seen a couple of black "YJM" partscasters, with variations like Squier bodies, Allparts necks, but no Fender USA or MIM ones.
I'd be very suspicious, and would at a minimum want to see the neck heel and pocket, a picture of the back, and a picture of the body with the pickguard removed.

I saw a black USA Custom Shop model from '88 or '89, and then the original '89-'91 Japan export model came in black as well.

Thanks for that piece of info - you got me learning new things...

First US version ('88-'97) colors: Sonic Blue, Seafoam Green, Vintage White, Candy Apple Red.
The Seafoam Green was dropped in 1998, Sonic Blue and CAR in 2006 - so only Vintage White YJM-MIA's after that.
Still found no black production model YJM-MIA...
Custom Shop models and one-offs - well I think nobody has any comprehensive list.

The MIJ's: 1989 to ???? ST-72 Export, Surf Green/SFG, Yellow White/YWH and Black BLK. Those EX models are real hard to track, so I leave the existence of a black YJM a faint possibility (a bit larger than unicorn sightings) for the mid/late nineties... But: those days Fender Japan made several models like the Malmsteen signature, with DiMarzios and fretboard scallops - they just weren't called YJM Signatures.
From 2004, only YWH and Pearl Yellow White PYW.

None of this, of course, applies to this US13 guitar (neck).
Gungnir, did you ask Fender about the serial, what was the answer? Don't leave us hanging...

In reality, there was never a Seafoam Green YJM. Always Sonic Blue, but they commonly faded to a Seafoam Green over time. That's why the old Sonic Blue models tend to look like Seafoam.

The old Japanese export models came in Vintage White, Sonic Blue, and Black. All of those that were Sonic Blue would look like Seafoam today. They were designed as a poor man's YJM. The scallops were much shallower, the frets were standard medium jumbo, all had the bullet truss rod adjustment, all had a "3-Bolt" neckplate, pickups were standard 5.5k single coils, knobs & pickup covers were black on all models. I owned 2 of these and changed out the pickups and plastic immediately. They were decent players, but clearly a big step below the USA YJM of the day.

Then after these were discontinued in 1991, Fender Japan made their (non-export) YJM Musicians Model which was top notch and actually preferred by Yngwie until Fender USA revised their Signature model in 1998. I don't recall the colors they made, but I only saw Vintage White. They likely made the same colors as the USA model... Vintage White, Sonic Blue, and Candy Apple Red.

I made my own Sonic Blue YJM knock-off using Warmoth parts...

OK, seems I've met a true YJM fan so I trust your knowledge over the info I've found.

Especially on the MIJ's it's a real jungle with all different export, lookalike, signature, special etc. models (not to mention partscaster builds). And anyways, I've never been a signature model target group member, so I've no personal relations with those.

Kicking myself in the butt, though. I just knew I should have sent Fender the 2$ they were asking for a brochure back in 1988...
