That's not what was implied in his comment:

"One might wonder of those who don't like them have even
actually played them"

IMHO he was inquiring as to whether or not the preference was a dissatisfaction based upon user experience with that design or just a lack of emotional appeal.

And I agree with you, but perhaps you could explain "Sometimes it's being "able" to use certain features that makes a huge difference."

Ok, so I am sure there will be the argument it means having the feature available to be "able" to to try it ... but I'm pretty sure that wasn't the intended meaning.

Any road up, what ever, it's all water under the bridge.

There certainly won't be an argument in the matter. Language usage is often not precise with regard to intend. I don't agree with your doubts. It has nothing to do with capability but rather the performance options availability he feels that the guitar offers the user.

You might have had issues with the VG Stratocaster, or the current Roland G-series Strats and the synthesizer, but they certainly provide the player with a palette of musical colors and sound possibilities than intended for the the original '54 design. I've actually seen and heard that combination used by a band down here. They can make four pieces sound like a big band.

Again, its' a matter of different strokes.

Quite the contrary. They are well integrated into the look of the Strat and perform a function in addition that of the basic instrument. They offer advanced features with very little (if any) impact on playabillity.

In many respects they are perhaps old technology now though with recent advances in note tracking from the likes of TC Electronics, EHX and others. You can now get a lot of the features you might desire using a conventional Strat.

My take is that it's always 90% the player and 10% the instruments.
What matters is what the player and audience feel good about. If the player doesn't feel good about it, he won't perform half as well.
In the case of a metal strat, I would not feel good about it, and it would not be a good guitar for me. But as the resident vet here said, different folks, different strokes. All the more power to you if that's your thing. But it's not mine, and I won't pretend it is. For shred, I feel more comfortable using a different guitar, and that's me.

The fact that Fender thought enough to put those three pickups together make it compelling to me when I first saw the pic in this thread. I would definitely like to take it through its paces. That being said, for those of us that could not identify year and model on the pics, is this a new/current model? (I know Fender makes Floyd-equipped models, but those are mostly standard Strats except for the bridge. This is much different than that...)

Oh ... and I like squash ...

Duly noted and suprising that the discussion didn't begin with that observation. The origins of this guitar are not known.
Doc

I'm an old man, too.
After years of collecting guitars that were essentially the same I culled to 3 Strats.
One is SSS
One is HSS
One is HSH
They're not essentially the same but they're my essential guitars.
I love single coils.
I love humbuckers.
Strats do them both so well.
The Strat is the quintessential guitar.
Regardless of what pups you like.
I was never a shredder so I haven't owned any locking nut Floyd guitars but I can appreciate the intent behind those devices.
The Strat is the perfect form and I love it but I still choose function over form every time.
Age be damned.

Just think of how awesome a guitar player you could have been by now if you had only spent the last 10 years practicing instead of obsessing over pickups and roasted maple necks.
