Maybe it's a torsional thing on the plate due to leverage induced by the length of the block.

That sounds plausible. The plate, while stiff, is not made out of diamond. It's not unthinkable that the side with the least tension will move a tiny fraction more or earlier than the other side.
Actually, I wasn't thinking so much about the plate flexing.
I sometimes wonder if my eyes are playing tricks on me or whether the plate does actually ride at different positions on U-groove on the two pins.
Wondering if a torsional vector might have anything to do with that.
If they ride at differing heights does that mean each side sees a different level of friction since the plate doesn't rotate completely perpendicular to the pins?
Does the fact one edge of the plate has a bevel and the other does not compound that by adding different interference angles?
I dunno.
I'm just farting in the wind.
Nobody's gonna "catch my drift" (whiff) so to speak.

Again, I don't know why it works.

Giving it some more thought it may not be relative to the springs and strings but the player. The trem arm is beyond the pivot points and the shape of the arm introduces all sorts of strange off centre leverage.

It could be the asymmetric spring arrangement (angled claw) works better in countering the off centre forces applied by the player?

That's a very interesting thought, John.
I can picture it.

Looking at it again, the claw is so far back, I am assuming the bridge is decked.

Damn! I was too focused on the springs to even notice the claw. Yep for a tremolo nut like Ritchie I'm surprised! I guess he liked to fight that thing.

Found this "In spring 1969 Ritchie bought a stock 1968 black maple neck Stratocaster. The 68 Strats still had the two-piece old tremolo construction with the steel inertia bar and the stamped vintage steel saddles. For this tremolo, Ritchie used a special custom-made " (6.3mm) heavy weighted steel arm, to attack the tremolo real hard. "

For a violent trem user, perhaps having the tail decked is better than fully floating. While you can't get "pull backs" at least you know it will go back to exactly the same place every time. You also don't have trem flex stealing your bends with the spring tension that much greater.
