Hi Guys .. just got an '05 loaded Eric Johnson body .. sound unheard

It all seems original (imho) but I can't tell about the Pups visually ..

Does anyone know the stock resistances .. I should know mine soon .. got a lil' soldering to do

I've read of three iterations ('05, '09, '16) .. all with changes to the Pups ..

Way too many images .. not to mention sleezy EJ fake anythings Galore!

But Hard & Fast Specifications .. Nooo ( :

Here are some pics if anyone can testify .. I'd appreciate it - TYVM - Dan

The wiring looked shoddy and drew my attention .. esp. the Vol pot .. scorch marks, hanging by strands, etc.

This may help specs at the bottom.
Pickups look ok you see the neck magnets are different but sonce you can buy these separately anyone could have soldered them.
Are the pot codes close or before the date on the guard?
The eric pdf shows no black wires from the tone pots relying on an earth thru the shield plate as well.

That would likely be the most reliable indicator of authenticity.

The neck pickup pole-piece stagger does seem anomalous though.

Yeah Arjay I could have phrased that better ... The neck magnets are meant to be a different stagger on the ejs and this appears to be the case here is what I meant. :D

Hokey dokey, got it. I'm not all that familiar with the EJ Strats, especially the "under the hood" details. The assembled pickguard may have been piece-mealed together using genuine EJ pickups, which might account for the amateur soldering job. I wonder if the body itself is real? I suppose one definitive sign would be the lack of screw holes for a rear trem cover.

The body should be 2 piece, centre joined alder, and as Arjay has already mentioned, no screw holes for a tremolo back plate.

The 2005 afaik was maple neck only with parchment pickguard and aged white plastics.

The 2008 revision saw the introduction of the rosewood version with parchment plastics alongside the original maple/aged white. The pickups were allocated different part numbers based on the cover colour.

In 2016 Fender started selling sets of EJ pickups which up until then were warranty only replacement items.

The EJ pickups are wound using an unusual wire colour neither copper like formvar or purple like plain enamel. Any chance of removing a pickup cover to check on the wire colour?

I'm finding that Eric Johnson Strats have a LOT more speculations than specifications written about them ..

I did manage to measure my Pup resistances which are close to '15 specs:

my 2005 Pups: Neck - 5.8 K .. Mid - 6.5K .. Bridge - 7.0K
Stock '15 Pups: Neck - 5.8K .. Mid - 6.3K .. Bridge - 6.9K

Good thinking .. that Service/Wiring Diagram is great .. although from 2015 .. this one EJ Service/Wiring diagram '05 is my model year ..

hmm .. no trem ground & the output jack is somehow wireless on both the '05 & '15 diagram!! this could get confusinger ...

Pots - T2 is clear with 0507 (Feb '05?) .. the P/G looks like 7-12-05 .. Pot Pics below ( :

Yup .. Therein lies the Crux .. if the EJ pups can be authenticated then I'm real Happy with this deal .. Body/Bridge/Neck Plate are Real .. Pups probably .. but I couldn't say for sure

Thanks for your insights Guys ..

You are correct Sir Mangler of Strats .. Yup that's all good .. 3lb 5.6oz .. correct routing .. finish and those comfy Deep Contours .. Unless you or Arjay spot an anomaly!

The comparison Body/Plate pics are with my "Hot Rod Brownie" build .. a Fender American Vintage Hot Rod 50s Body

That would describe my P/G & the Neck (which I passed on) ..

There is an Excellent chance of seeing some Pup wiring ...

I stumbled over a great photo by rockbeareguitars of an '05 EJ Strat in his extensive collection ...

That was a lucky break & all the affirmation I need .. the 16 visible out of 18 poles matched mine ...

And they're still made with the Neck pup high "e" pole at half height (unlike the mid & bridge) & the "b" pole flat as the other "b" poles are ...

I'm grateful to all the forum members who responded .. and of course rockbeare ...

Image

below a pic of my set for easy comparison

Now which tuners to use .. I'm leaning towards this unusual looking .. locking & staggered set by Gotoh SD91 MG-T in Nickel

Thanks .. those are a real possibility ..

I'd like a set of the MG-T with Tortoise buttons to complement a Macassar Ebony fretboard .. waiting for a response on price/availability

I used Gotoh's 510 HAPM 3 1/2 years ago on another build .. Great tuners but the locking mechanism is unusual .. all in an effort to look like an old budget model! ( :

I just thought that the other set you'd pictured ruined the vintage vibe of the EJ.
What's wrong with the original ones?

+1

Install a set of Kluson Deluxe repros and be done with it.
