The first thing I did with my American Special was cut the strings off. I wanted to thoroughly clean it, and condition the fretboard (rosewood). I use GHS strings (extra light), but Fender uses this same gauge on this model, so no problem there. If you walk the strings a few times before tuning up, staying in tune shouldn't be an issue. I adjusted the trem claw screws a little, as the bridge was floating higher than I liked out of the box. It's at about 1/8" now from the body, down from probably 3/8" from the factory. The current strings are about a month old with daily play, and I haven't really had to touch the tuners. Not sure if I'm lucky or what. I'm by no means what would be considered highly skilled at guitar maintenance. The internet can be a wonderful thing.
