Hey everyone,

I've used D'Addario EXL .10-.46 guage strings for awhile and quite like them (though I wish I could get a hold of XLS strings) but have recently decided to try something new. I bought a set of .11-.50 GHS Boomers, just to experiment and have yet to put them on. I'm wondering, since I have nearly zero set up experience, if anyone has any tips on adjustments to the action (I figure I'll have to raise it a tad to accomodate the heavier strings) as well as resetting the intonation (the saddles don't look perfectly spaced like the Fender set-up guide says it should).

If anyone has any help on how I should set this baby up, please let me know!! Thanks.

Howdy,

Things to consider:
Heavier strings may require a tweak of the truss rod. If you've never done that, then I suggest a pro shop setup for your new string gauge.

Install new strings - tune correctly. Then begin these steps... Re-tune regularly...

1. Truss (capo 1st, fret 13th measure at 6th around .010" height for rock)
2. String height at 1st fret
3. Bridge height
4. String "length"

After adjusting the truss rod, allow guitar to "settle" and check again, maybe even wait a day or two... Always check with strings tuned to correct pitch. That way the string tension is where you need it for the adjustment to be most accurate...

These are the main considerations when changing string gauges.
Hope this helps... :)
Peace,
Scotty
