I just put a deposit on a 04/05 Highway One Strat. Are they alder? What pickups came originally & is the route under the pickguard sss or a swimming pool? Also can the tuners easily be changed out to vintage style? With my MS, I find the vintage style tuners easier to use. Thanks in advance.

Here's the HW1 specs courtesy of Sweetwater......

Fender Highway 1 Stratocaster Features:
Color: 3-color Sunburst
Body Type: Solidbody electric.
Finish: Satin nitrocellulose lacquer.
Neck Wood: Maple.
Neck Shape: Modern "C" shape with 9.5-inch radius.
Body Wood: Solid alder.
Machine Heads: Fender / Ping standard cast / sealed tuners.
Fingerboard: Rosewood.
No. of Frets: 22.
Position Markers: Dot inlays.
Pickups: Three vintage style single coils with staggered polepieces and Alnico magnets.
Controls: Master volume, two tone.
Bridge/Tailpiece: Vintage style synchronized tremolo.
Pickup Switching: Five-position blade switch.
Hardware: Chrome.
Case: Deluxe Gig Bag included
Scale Length: 25.5 inches.

As for the pickup routs, I believe it's Fender's ubiquitous S/S/H configuration.

Arjay

I'll confirm that routing but reversed, it's a H(bridge)-S(middle)-S(neck).

If you absolutely must replace the tuners (you may find the originals quite sufficient), my best advice is to let a good pro do the switch and a full setup while at it.
AFAIK there's no direct replacement available, but with correct bushings it ain't a difficult job.

Not sure about the '04 models, but here's a review I wrote on eBay a long time ago :

"The Fender Hwy 1 Stratocaster has two upgrades in the past 15 months. In May/2005, the "greasebucket circuit" was incorporated allowing the roll-off of the tone control without adding bass. This upgrade did not feature a reverse wound/reverese polarity middle single coil pickup.

In May/2006, the headstock was changed to the larger style and the frets were changed to Jumbo frets. This upgrade also included a reverse wound/reverse polarity pickup for hum cancelling in positions 2 and 4. The price is now $749.99 at online dealers such as Musicians Friend."

Other upgrades included distortion-friendly vintage-style singles with AlNiCo III magnets and a DH-1 Atomic bridge humbucking pickup on the HSS models.
