I recently purchased a can of nitrocellulose aerosol from a company in the UK (near where the Beatles come from).

On receipt I noted that the can nozzle and can valve had paint on/in them.

Aerosols can be tricky at the best of times and I wasn't over keen on starting an important job with a dirty nozzle.

I contacted the company in question and have to admit to being somewhat stunned by their attitude.

Apparently they might have "tested" the can before dispatch. Or the spray was due to them putting the nozzle on the can - even though both cans I received had the nozzles loose. I suggested that, if they want to "test" the can they should use their own nozzles not the customers. Apparently they consider themselves one of the largest suppliers in the UK sending out 100s of cans a week. Seemingly around 30% of these are "tested" and yet I am the first to complain about a dirty can/nozzle.

Personally, I didn't think I was being unreasonable to expect a clean nozzle when buying a new can.

I purchased two cans, a blue and a clear lacquer. I can't tell if the clear has been "tested" but weighed both cans. The blue was around 3 grams lighter. I'm not sure if, under normal circumstances, the pigments and fillers in the solid colour would make it more dense than the clear. Obviously I have no clue how much material is expelled in the "test".

My discussion with the company spanned several emails and I can only assume they would rather save the matter of pence to supply a new nozzle than retain customer good will. Apparently they will send me a new nozzle if the dirty one is blocked - a bit late if the can has sprayed all over my hand, or spat globs all over my guitar, or both.

I am now considering buying a bag of nozzles rather than risk undertaking any of the project with a used nozzle, so perhaps their arrogance has done me a favour.

Probably the wisest solution, John.

We get the same chutzpah from certain retailers here in the colonies as well. Once a company pisses me off they go on my permanent excrement roster, never to be trusted again.

Hope the re-fin goes well.

Perhaps solvent abuse isn't making them particularly receptive to their customers; or perhaps that is the issue?

Aw, c'mon Matt. Cut Art some slack. Everyone knows you gotta protect your nozzle. :P

I had a whole bag of nozzles arrive today so I can now treat my nozzle with complete abandon.

I also found another UK supplier of Nitro aerosols (more stuff arriving on Monday :-) so wont feel compelled to further trouble the original supplier with my custom.

I have a can of sanding sealer and primer arriving together with tack cloth and more wet and dry. I elected for sanding sealer and primer although hoping I wont need to employ the primer. With a good number of areas on the body with exposed wood (through the previous owners vandalism) I am hoping the sanding sealer will be an adequate base for the Daphne Blue colour coat. I am looking for a worn, part exposed, sunburst look so don't really want a primer layer if I can avoid it. I also have a slight tint clear lacquer to finish off so am quite excited.

I am after a less than pristine finish but exhibiting more believable abuse than is currently the case.

Now a matter of working out when I can be without the guitar for three weeks to allow adequate drying times. It would be nice to get it in the freezer for a couple of nights to try to craze up the lacquer if I can as well.

Looking forward to seeing your end product, John. Daphne Blue was the colour of the first Strat I had my hands on 53 years ago. I know it'll be a beauty. :D

I think I remember the pic of that Strat when you posted it. It would be cool to see both pics in this thread once completed.

+1

IIRC it was a 3TSB body with a very amateurish relic job that John did a pretty fair job of saving and assembling into a nice package. The "2.0" version should look even better.

Ah, now I understand, John - you're refinishing your sunburst MIM 'relic'! Obviously that dodgy job by the previous owner finally got to you!

Don't recall, was/is it a nitro finish? IE: Are you putting nitro over nitro?

Looking forward to seeing the end product. I'm a big fan of the vintage finishes... :D

Cheers - Peter.

Well I will certainly keep you updated.

It is proving to be a relatively expensive project with over £100 spent on materials alone (including extra nozzles). Granted some of the materials may not get used, or only used in part, but as this is the only one I am planning to do (unless I spot another project guitar that I can sneak in under the radar). As it is it is all cost directly to Odee.

A bit of a disaster before we start in that SWMBO has declared she thinks blue is a strange colour for a guitar. She also doesn't like it with the obligatory mint guard. "C'est la vie" or "Such is life" as they say in France :-)
