If you want something that's gonna cover them all, most strats period will handle it with their versatility. Probably gonna want some CS '69 pickups in whatever you end up with, or something similarly low output.

I agree, they'll pretty much all do Jimmy well, except if you get a strat with two humbuckers instead of singles.

Pretty any MIA or MIM strat will get the right tone and feel. More of that tone will come from your amp though. Hendrix's actual guitar through a Crate practice amp will not sound like Jimmy, just for a reference. You'll need a good tube amp for that style, to really get that feel, that feedback and that tone.

You could get a 69 custom shop strat or a 66. those have a really nice low output with trebly highs and bassy lows. just like hendrix.

Classic Player 60s Strats have custom '69 pups and i can say they are brilliant! The neck pup is out of this world.

Obviously approximately the right pickups are going to help, like those mentioned above. And, ditto, the right kind of rig, too.

But the most important thing is to get a guitar YOU feel comfortable playing. Take a look at some pictures of Jimi's hands. Those are enviably long, skinny fingers: nothing like my hands and possibly nothing like yours.

Give me one of Jimi's actual Strats and it ain't going to help me get his sound - in fact, I will probably find it very awkward indeed, especially if the body is turned the opposite way round to what I'm used to. And that will likely be the same for you too. Particularly, don’t be worrying about reverse headstocks, turning the pickups upside-down – any of that stuff. That really is beside the point.

We can all get a little of the way to sounding like Jimi, and for most of us that will have to do. Finding an instrument that is comfy in your grip is first base. And that choice will be different for all of us.

Cheers - C

Ceri said it all right there.
There are many ways to achieve these tones...
The amp itself, Pickups, EQing, certain pedals...
For example Hendrix has low output pickups,
where SRV had high output.

Find the guitar that feels and plays like it was made for your hands.
The devil will be in the details as u explore!

[quote="jimihendrixisgod"]whats the best strat for someone wanting to play hendrix/clapton/srv/coltrane-esque styles?

Give an ear to the Hendrix tribute CD....or the live CD by Paul Rogers and Company from Miami, or SRV's interpretations, or "The Rainbow Concert" with Clapton et al, doing "Little Wing".

These are not all done with the same gear. They get a feel for the sound, that's about as far as you're going to get.

As I have suggested elsewhere: get yourself a copy of September's 'Guitar World' and read it in detail....take notes if you will...

.............then........... ask yourself where you possibly can begin?

Doc

I believe the Strat he used at Woodstock was a 69 Strat, same design and headstock of the 70s Strats. The color was Olympic White and don't forget his effects chain which went like this in this order as follows:

1) Vox Wah-Wah to:

2) Octavia to:

3) Dallas Arbiter Fuzz Face to:

4) Univox Univibe:

and then into Marshall Amp.

The Univox Univibe isn't made any more but there's excellent Univibe clones on the market today that use the same exact incandescent lamp and photocell resistor circuit exactly. 2 of the best one's are the Fulltone Mini Deja Vibe and Bob Sweet's Sweetsound Ultra or Mojo Vibe. Robin Trower is currently using the Fulltone Deja Vibe 2, but many people think that the Sweetsound Ultra or Mojo Vibe is the better way to go and hit's the nail right on the head. Dunlop has copied the Dallas Arbiter Fuzz Face down to original specs. only instead of using the Germanium transistors which were so unstable as one day the pedal would sound good and on another day it wouldn't was because of the Germanium transistors reacting to the temprature of the weather, Dunlop went with Silicon transistors. They also copied the his very first version (wedge shaped) Octavia down to original specs. That's what will aid you in getting his effects & sound.

Well, there's the shopping list on the effects chain. Now for someone with the details on the Marshalls.

$10K and one floppy hat later, we should have this ambitious individual outfitted.
