Hey, I'm thinking about replacing my standard tuners with locking tuners. I have a 2003 MIM Strat. So far I found three that look good:

1. Fender Deluxe Schaller Locking Machine Heads
http://www.guitarcenter.com/Fender-Delu ... 1130142.gc

2. Schaller Locking Guitar Machines
http://www.stewmac.com/shop/Tuners/Guit ... hines.html

3. Planet Waves Auto-Trim Locking Guitar Machines
http://www.stewmac.com/shop/Tuners/Guit ... hines.html

Anyone have recommendations as to which one would be best?

I have the Fender Schaller Locking Tuners in 2 of my Fenders and they get the job done.Gets the strings in tune and changing strings are a lil easier....But somehow it looks a bit different from the link that you put.
Mine has the "F" logo on the thumbscrew.

Be careful and shop around mate, some locking tuners require the tuner holes on the headstock to be re-bored. Particularly if your guitar has a 50's/60's style headstock like the classic player series. Measure the existing hole diameter and make enquiries. All th best with it tho.

Yea I was wondering about anchor points or screws. The Schaller Locking Guitar Machines require one small screw per tuner. I'm not sure about the Fender Deluxe though. I'm Guessing the Fender branded ones should be the most compatible and easiest to install.

I'm thinking at least one anchor would be good to ensure the post does not rotate, but maybe its not really needed. I have worked with wood a lot and can easly bore out holes and make small screw holes, but I really don't want to change the head stock if I don't have to.

Thanks for the replies guys, and for the pics belphedeus

I'm partial to Sperzels myself, but all those you mentioned are very good as well.

Regarding the fixing issue: it's always nice if you can match the pattern of screw holes or pins on your existing tuners, so's not to have to drill new holes.

Check the Schaller website.

http://schaller-guitarparts.de/hp762/Produkte.htm

They have good clear photos of all their tuners and I seem to remember there are technical drawings somewhere there also, so you can find the exact model you want. (I'm pretty sure your peghead will have modern 10 mm pegholes, by the way. But measure first. Locking tuners are available for both hole sizes.)

If StewMac don't stock what you are after then they are an Official Schaller dealer, and I believe that means they can order any Schaller part you need. I hope that's true: I've given out that advice a couple of times before and not heard to the contrary...

I wouldn't get too hung up on whether your new tuners have a Fender "F" on them or not. Not the most important thing...

Cheers - C

Of the one's you listed; the Fender Deluxe, are the only "drop in" fit. They have two alignment pegs about 1/4" apart and replacing the standard tuners is simply a matter of unscrewing the 10mm nut on the old tuner and putting the new tuner in. I installed them on my 2006 MIM Strat. It only added about 5 to 10 minutes to a regular string change.

Hey, thanks for the help. I got the Fender Deluxe Schaller Locking Machine Heads, they are great. They dropped right in just like you guys said they would. They even have the f Fender logo on the thumb screws. They are also staggered so I don't need my string tree anymore. But I'm gonna leave it on so I do not have an empty hole in my head stock.

I also got GraphTech saddles as well. I just put new strings on, and this guitar now holds its tune perfectly, even with new strings. It seems like a perfect setup. I recommend this setup. Thanks.
