I'd like to hear peoples opinions of mahogany as a body wood. Ive had to scrap my squire series/mexican/fender body after refinishing it, i found the tone of the basswood used to be too zingy. Like listening to a ice cream headache. I think its why they put a 1/8" thick polyurethane finish on em, to calm the treble/bite down. Anyway i've seen a nice mahogany body whilst i know its going to sound dark i think coupled with a maple neck and trebley pickups it could balance. Please voice opinions/experiences i could be very wrong.

Mahogany has a darker sound; think Gibson SG / Les Paul.

I think Mike is correct. With the maple neck and the right combination of PUPs it might produce the sound your looking for. Better than what you ended up with huh?

No doubt about it. The combination of type of wood, type of finish, and type of electronics can make or break a guitar. Mahogany does have an inherant darker tone on its own merit.

I knew someone who had the African Mahogany for his LP; it was very light and sounded great.

yeah its an unusual combination mahog body maple board. All i think is, if its any good why isn't it more popular? a strat with gibson like depth but still stratty sounds like a winner, could be a dogs dinner. Still nothing ventured nothing gained eh?

Mike thanks for the link and advice really usefull. Fight the good fight mate.

No problemo =]

One thing though is that the true "Strat" sound comes from the Alder body...Fender has done Koa, which is kind of a combination of Alder and Mahogany, so it would still have some "Strat-y-ness" to it, but I would assume that they would avoid using Mahogany because it would lose the sound that we all exact from a Strat. This is only an assumption. A maple neck would brighten up the sound and it would without a doubt be very unique...if you don't do it, I will ;)
