Hi,

Got a new Elite Strat and had issues rolling back the volume knob when palm muting so I had the middle tone knob removed, the volume knob/s-1 switch moved down and the third knob (with no load pot) is now a master tone.

This has done some good and some questionable things. First of all, the tone is noticeably better. The weird part that I am questioning is, can this have some affect on dynamic range? Or not so much can it, because it definitely did, but how? Does having that second tone in the circuit add some sort of compression?

Example. I recorded a song prior to the mod where I palm-mute, then open up with some non palm mute strums; before the mod, the output was quite similar whether palm muting or not--its even visually noticeable by looking at the waveform. After the mod, I played the same exact part, level matched and in the same position (s-1 switch engaged, second position with neck and middle in series) and when I open up after the palm mutes the output is quite a bit higher, and the peaks of the waveform jump up a lot more.

It is quite the trade-off because having the "now" master tone able to allow the neck pickup to have no load, I have unlocked some great/better tone than before, but the open strums are almost too hot when not palm muting.

If anyone can explain why this is happening that would be cool. I am guessing that tone circuits act like compressors and in the factory setup the neck pickups tone control limits the output.

Sounds like simply having 1 tone pot in the circuit now, vs having 2 tone pots in the circuit at the same time before, in the position 4 (not second, but fourth position is neck and middle). There is no compression possible with a pot, it can only lower the output, and reduce the highs in combination with a capacitor.
