I am currently playing a Traynor custom valve tube amp which is highly underrated and a pretty decent amp. I am looking for a used Mesa 5:50 so it should work out ok.

late to the party here..

I have 2 strats, one w/fat 50s and the other with texas specials.

The fat50s strat w/a maple board, tex specs has a rosewood. I like both setups, the tex specs are a bit more aggressive, but this works for me on this guitar.

I can get really good neck pup sounds, and the bridge pup cuts good. But I will say, for me... pos 2 and 4 doesn't quite get there with these pups IMO..

Fat 50s are smoother, a bit more chime and bottom end, and the more traditional tone from pos 2 and 4 with these.

Of course we all know this is all very subjective, what works for you may not work for me... for me, the trade offs in this combination of pickups works good. they sound different enough to make it worth having the 2.

the other guitarist in my band just put a set of Tex Specs in his strat (a prewired pickgaurd) he is really happy with them so far. (This was a 90s MIM strat, w/the stock pickups. With out doubt it's a huge jump in response for him..)

Never too late for a party!
I appreciate your opinion.
In a lot of ways I might like the Texas Specs but I do not want to take a chance and drop $300 cad for pups I may not like. I think the Vintage hots are more likely to suit my needs and seem pretty popular and well liked. Maybe more of a sure thing.

The Texas Specials aren't a one size fits all setup, that's for sure. You're smart to look for something else. Don't have experience with the pups you mentioned.

I will say, do like what the Fat 50s do..

Yeah I love the 50's. They sound awesome. I have them in the neck and middle of my Shawbucker Strat. Very pleased.
