Heya, I am wondering how many metal players there are using stratocasters. I am asking because I am teetering on getting something other than a Stratocaster (will not mention other brands here...). I like playing everything from Santo and Johnny to VanHalen or harder. I love the feel and playability of the American Standard.

They put a MiM Dave Murray HHH into production a couple of years ago though Moonface occasionally plays a vintage white maple neck US Special Floyd Rose with the same configuration of Hot Rails/Jeff Beck Jr.

Initially his guitars were fitted with a set of Hot Rails but for some reason Dave put a Jeff Beck Jr. in the middle slot to balance things out.

Does Glenn Tipton of Judas Priest qualify?

The following guys used Stratocasters for heavy metal and glam metal.
Some of the guys used other guitars as well.
Some used Strats initially and then switched to something else.

Eddie Clarke - Motorhead
Dave Murray - Iron Maiden
Jim Root - Slipknot
Mick Mars - Motley Crue
Tony Iomi - Ozzy + (used Strats before switching to SGs)
Jake E Lee - Ozzy +
Kirk Hammett - Metallica (studio recording, not stage)
Andreas Kisser - Sepultura
Trever Perez - Obituary
Glenn Tipton - Judas Priest
KK Downing - Judas Priest
Robbin Crosby - Ratt (studio recording, not stage)

There are dozens more, I just can't think of them all at the moment.

The Kirk Hammett thing has always been pretty interesting to me.
Let's just say I get a couple of snickers once in a while out of it.
People sometimes ask how to sound like Metallica but they've got some sort of Dungeons & Dragons guitar with sharp, pointy, pokey things sticking out all over the place like a scene from Predator or maybe Worf's bat'leth when what you need is a HSS Stratocaster.

Just think of how awesome a guitar player you could have been by now if you had only spent the last 10 years practicing instead of obsessing over pickups and roasted maple necks.

Robbin Crosby used Jacksons onstage.

Robbin's most famous axes were radical variations of a Gibson Firebird custom-built by Grover Jackson in the 1980s, featuring a reverse droopy headstock, Floyd Rose tremolos, Seymour Duncan humbucking pickups and black hardware.

What part of BMW-KTM's "Robbin Crosby - Ratt (studio recording, not stage)" did you feel needed correction?

Anyhow, I think the whole thing is a bit misleading. HM strats are so different from regular strats that it pretty much only is the shape that's the same.
Players that use more traditional strats are fewer. There's Ritchie Blackmore and Yngwie Malmsteen, but I'm not sure I'd call either "metal". Some might consider heavy rock and shred "metal", while others won't.

Thanks for the all the replies! I think I'll get my American Standard and get a shredder for when I wanna shred.

Not wishing to put you off a Strat as you wont regret it when you get older but have you considered Charvel http://www.charvel.com/. Owned by Fender with, seemingly, a fair degree of parts interchangeability.

The Pro-Mod range looks comparable in price and has all those things that shredder types seem to like.

Very clever, but...
1. It's not metal!
2. Less relevantly, BB could get more emotion out of 5 or 6 notes played a lot slower; likewise Gary Moore a bit faster! I keep trying to remember that!
Seriously, any HH Strat with suitable pups will 'do' metal, much of which comes from the amp anyway, as far as I can see.

Cheers - Peter.

EJ could probably make a chair sound good.

My understanding (having been slapped down by sundry shredding adolescents on another forum) is they look for a clean amp with good headroom and then shove drive pedals in front of it. Who would have thought? And what is the gain stage of an amp if it isn't, as it were, a drive pedal living inside the amplifier. Go figure.
