One note: there were also nitro finished Strats in 1984. So just to make sure, what model is the guitar?

Usually, surface repairs are possible. If there's only damage in the top coat, polishing may be enough - the finish type determines what to use for this. If the wood has dented, it gets a lot harder; sometimes it's best to just let that be.

Here, I looked at the pic a couple of times, trying to guess where the 'out, damn spot' is. Apparently I guessed right, but based on that one pic it doesn't look bad.
Anyways, the tragedy is that without this topic you could have hidden behind the old 'it was there since day one'...

I'll admit I can't see the problem, but it is a guitar. If you sweat over it being imaculate you won't enjoy it for what it is. I appreciate it is frustrating, particularly when it wasn't you that did it, but embrace it as part of the character of the guitar. If you fret over the mark you will become consumed by it and see nothing but the mark every time you pick it up.

You would do well to buy yourself a Road Worn. Having a battered guitar is very liberating.

Pretty sure I can see the blemish. The reflection of the blinds are all dead straight, but then all of a sudden there looks like a patch a couple inch square where the blinds go wavy?

I can see that but I don't think it is a couple of inches. I'm assuming the area is on the back at the top corner of the scallop.

It might have been there previously and only just been noticed? The surface doesn't seem to be damaged in any way so it is perhaps unlikely it was knocked.

It might just be that the wood has decided to move. Wood can be like that. Perhaps there was a change in temperature/humidity between where it normally lives and the shop?

The method of viewing is by far the most extreme and even the very slightest surface deformation will be amplified. I got really frustrated with my black pickguard because, when on the stand, I could see reflections of the window mullions in it and it looked deformed around the screws. I changed the pickguard (for another black one) and, while better, it did the same. I then loosened the screws less than ¼ turn and the majority of the marks went.

My original recommendation stands - ignore it. Better still - Play it like you stole it. It will soon get a few more marks and the first one will no longer seem an issue.

All I see in that picture is the reflection of a venetian blind.

OP has the date wrong - it's not April 1st for another 6 weeks or so!

Can you upload a higher res picture without the blinds in the reflection?
