Ok cheers

The tele is still sat in bits after I got it back from the other local tech. One of the ground wires wasn't connected when I got it back, hence not going back there.

Irongear said they couldn't see anything wrong with how it's wired, and pointed the finger at the soldering. Unfortunately I havn't looked at it because I thought I could quickly get the new neck on then at least have 1 of my guitars back and working.

That obviously hasn't gone to plan haha, so currently they are both just big attractive paperweights.

When I weighed up the jobs of this new neck and the new pickup in the 72, I thought well they are both pretty much drop in replacements, shouldn't take long !

I don't know that I would alter the neck at all, but it would be the easier job for sure.
You have already altered the body anyway, maybe more alterations are needed.
I also agree after measuring and making your own determination of what the remaining issue is talk to the tech w/ specific details to see if he agrees and believes it will fix the problem.
It may be fixable w/ only shims.

Well today I took both this strat and my 72 custom tele down to see Andy Guyton of Guyton Guitars, who not only is the only guy with permission to produce replicas of Brian mays red special, but also works on his original guitar.

If it's good enough for the white perm'd wonder, it's good enough for me. Fingers crossed.

That sounds expensive!!!
But what the hell, it'd be great if you were there at least to watch and give instant feedback.

Getting the neck sorted on this strat and the upgraded pickup in the tele and it's associated wiring working is gonna cost me about £100, including set ups and 1 set of strings. Definitely not cheap but I'm hoping I get what I pay for.
