I am relatively a novice player and would like to know the difference between the Fender Squier Classic Vibe Strat 60 vs the Fender Strat standard.

The Squier retails for $399.00 while the Standard is $599. Is it just because the Standard is the real deal while the Squier is a knock off? Are there any major hardware differences and most importantly playability and sound differences?

Like I said, I'm just a novice and I don't intend to be a pro musician, but I guess the main question is: Will the additional $200 in cost make a difference to a novice like me. Please advise and Mahalo from the island of Hawaii.

The Squier Classic Vibe Strats are very nice entry-level instruments, much better than Fender's Bullet or Affinity line. That said, there are numerous dimensional differences between the CV Strat and a "genuine" Fender. Thus, many parts are not interchangeable and to my knowledge, Fender has yet to produce any accessory sets for the Squier line. But for a novice just getting his feet wet who's not interested in upgrades or modding, the basic JV Strat will serve that purpose well.

The Classic Vibe is a firm favourite on the Andertons "Sound like XXXX without breaking the bank" YouTube videos. It would seem that it is pretty much the go to option in sounding like any Strat player and frees up more of the budget to spend on a better amp which is perhaps a more important consideration.

However, I know badge snobbery shouldn't be a thing but, as you progress, you will receive less grief with a Standard. Additionally, should you wish to change anything, even the colour of the pick guard it will be completely painless with the Mexican Standard compared to pretty tricky with a Squier.

In the long term I think you will keep a Standard for much longer (always) where as the Squier may well get replaced. Second hand they are worth next to nothing.

My last comment has given me an idea - Why not buy a second hand Squier in the short term? Because they are so cheap it is unlikely that you will get caught out on a fake. I doubt anyone would fake a Squier as for almost no additional cost they could pass it off as something more expensive. You can then move on to something more expensive and will subsequently, through your gained experience, better appreciate and enjoy the more costly guitar.

An excellent suggestion.

+1 from me, too. And use the money saved on a) a setup done by a good pro, and b) a better amp than you had planned.

Getting a Squier to mod up seems a good idea to me.

I think one of the first things to do would be to put some shielding in under the pickguard, maybe even change the pickups. Turn it into a project.

I'd never do stuff like that to a proper Fender but Squier by Fender... maybe a tele, jazzmaster, mustang, ...

Why not?

I haven't yet seen a stock Fender guitar that satisfied my purposes. Eventually they do but only after I've had my way with them.

Absolutely. Some "proper" Fenders are just adequate guitars when, with a bit of work, they can be exceptional.

In many respects it makes a great deal more sense to spend £150-£200 on pickups for an £800 guitar than strap them to a £200 guitar. Fine if you have some spare in a box doing nothing but it doesn't really make sense otherwise.

I appreciate this is taking the comparison to the extreme but it is an interesting video none the less.

Obviously on computer speakers you aren't really going to hear the full differences so best to click and flick through bits and then cut to the conclusions.
