I have seen quick examples of dive bombing, but I don't quite understand it. How does it work? Is this harmful to the Strat?

Thanks.

Dive-bombing is basically just hitting a note and then lowering the whammy as far as it will go. I have seen this done a few different ways, either by hitting a harmonic prior to the dive, or returning to the neutral position after hitting a harmonic.

I do not believe it is harmful to the Strat, just part of wear and tear that will eventually happen over time.

And ... possibly ... your tuning.

Includes using the whammy bar to the point the string that is sounding is basically at a stage where it is loose enough to dangle, yet still maintains some tone generation capabilities. Eddie VH was/still is rguably the king of this.

The song is called Nightmare. In the first bits of lead guitar, I hit the harmonic at the 5th fret ( high E and B strings), then dive the whammy bar down to the point where the string are loose. Shaking the guitar slightly induces a gutteral growl from the remaining strings.

Practice until you achieve the desired sound.
