My local music store has this, and I am not sold on his theory, any thoughts I am curios, not that I am going to buy it. They want $2,375, but I am thinking

Used 1979 Fender® Stratocaster® serial number S934877. This guitar is in very good to excellent condition. The neck and frets are fine, cosmetically quite nice.

Upon close examination we made some interesting observations. When viewing the interior of the guitar, as seen in our photos, the neck code is at the butt end and you can see a plug for the old 4-bolt style neck truss-rod adjustment. Yet at the bottom of the neck there’s the disc for the 3 bolt Micro-Tilt™ and the anchor for the bullet style truss-rod. This is quite unusual. You can also see where the 4-bolt holes were drilled and fill at the factory.

Here’s what Bill Imperial theorizes: This neck was hanging around since the early ‘70s 4 bolt days and someone at Fender® made an executive decision to convert it for 1979 3-bolt usage. Plug the now obsolete holes and fit it with all the 3-bolt accoutrements. Quite a story! Also you’ll see in the photos that the pickup pole pieces were grounded. We’ve seen this once before, most likely to reduce hum. We also speculate it is possible that the neck & bridge pickups were rewound. The winding formers appear to be original (although the codes are not readable) but the neck pickup DC resistance is 7.16 K ohms, the bridge pickup is 9.89 K ohms. Both notably higher than the expected 5.49 K ohms of the middle pickup.

Some out of the ordinary observations to be sure, on a guitar that plays and sounds exactly as it should. Nice Strat® ready to keep playing

All original one cost less than $1700

This guitar look to have some job done to the pickups wiring.
I see black tape ant Ty-rap. New pickups ?
Not all original wiring in electronics.

I won't buy it

Yeah I have some suspicions especially "Here’s what Bill Imperial theorizes: This neck was hanging around since the early ‘70s 4 bolt days and someone at Fender® made an executive decision to convert it for 1979 3-bolt usage. That guitar is on ebay for $2550; ebay 1979 Strat 282332960533

The price is on the verge of ridiculous.
The theory on the neck is a theory.
Otherwise, if it plays OK and one is into natural finishes (I'm not) and late seventies bighead 3bolt Strats (I'm not), it's a nice guitar.

Did they use shielding paint in 1979? I thought they started using it a little later..

Was 1979 not the year of the 25th Anniversary model?
I found this breakdown of an Anniversary http://www.fenderreissue.com/1979-fende ... aster-1899
Fender under Leo - Leo was all for using up whatever spare parts were lying around.
Fender under CBS - the accountants were all for using up whatever spare parts were lying around.

The neck could be a modified 25th Anniversary model one, left over from the run of Anniversary guitars.
The standard production guitars still had the bullet truss rod adjuster, and used the 3 bolt arrangement,

Nice catch that 25th Anni.
Of course that 'leftover neck' from that model is also possible - which would make this a factory built Partscaster...

But any theory will with all likelihood (= unless a very reliable source pops up and confirms this or that) remain just a theory, leaving the possibility that all modding was done after the guitar (or its parts) left the factory. Theorizing further: the person who rewound the pickups could just as well have done the neck job.
IMHO, that kinda situation doesn't justify pushing up the price of the instrument.
And double IMHO, this guitar should sell for a couple hundred MU's (monetary units) below the price of an original instrument in comparable condition.
Of course: anyone who has the cash available can vote differently and buy the instrument for the sum they're asking.

Never mind all the theories - what does it WEIGH?!!! My '79 was heavier than any Les Paul I've had or played - that alone would stop me buying another...!!!

Cheers - Peter.

Absolutely. A guitar with impeccable provenance will maintain its value. Something with questionable history, based on supposition and theory, will always remain questionable unless solid evidence can be found to support the theory.

In summary, it probably isn't worth what they are asking by a reasonable margin, and is unlikely to appreciate in value in the same way as a "legitimate" guitar.

And, as Peter S, points out it may not necessarily be great to play.

+1

I'm just not seeing $2300 in this guitar. Too many "if's" and "maybe's" for me.
