Back to the original thought. If Fender split off the MiM facility and created Fender Mexico then perhaps those of us in the rest of the World would then get cheaper MiM's if Fender Mexico guitars are shipped direct?

I suspect you are correct; if a 20% tariff was imposed on Mexican-made goods coming into the USA then Fender would set up business entity to ship the MIM models to the rest of the world - assuming the costs of setting up and running the separate "Fender Mexico" entity would be less than just paying the tariff. Either way the cost will be passed on to consumers.

Exactly. I say give him a chance; he might surprise you all (like RR did). At least he says what he thinks, unlike our politicians who CANNOT give a straight answer to a simple question, for example - "Did you know, Prime Minister, that the Trident missile went the wrong way...?". Makes me puke.

But does he play a Strat? Probably best if he doesn't. After all, Tony Blair does/did, and look where that got us (in GB)!

Cheers - Peter.

It is no doubt a very complicated scenario. The joy/USP of the MiM is they are cheap. Once they become less cheap there is less point for their existence. Granted a fall in the rate of the dollar might off set the difference but this should also reduce the cost of MiA's.

To created "Fender Mexico" could maintain the cost effectiveness of the MiM but you then have the issue of getting the profit of "Fender Mexico" back to the US share holders. It is making my head hurt just thinking about it.

I would think there could be a real danger of MiM's becoming a piece of Fender history.

I haven't been following the issue really closely.
Is it just Mexico or will the Korean, Japanese and Chinese models be affected as well?

Just think of how awesome a guitar player you could have been by now if you had only spent the last 10 years practicing instead of obsessing over pickups and roasted maple necks.

Well, with no harm meant to the Mexicans who build Fenders, maybe FMIC will transfer their Mexican operation to Canada considering our dollar is pathetic, and the fact that we already supply much of the maple. Yes, there are and have been some good guitars built here . . . mostly acoustics. Still, I'm happy with my American Strat. All of this is interesting to be sure.

I wouldn't have a problem with that whatsoever. If I can save a buck or two on a quality instrument, I'm down with it. And Canadians DO know how to rock -- you gave us Pat Travers, April Wine, Kim Mitchell, Triumph, Rush, and countless other great acts.

(I do forgive you for Celine Dion)

Those were kind words brother Arjay. As for Celine - my apologies for sending her your way. For me, others will disagree, you are welcome to keep her if you like. My pleasure. :D

No biggee. Shania Twain came along as part of that deal so it all balanced out in the end.

 ROTFL  LMAO

I think it was a fair trade, Arjay. Besides, there's more Biebs where he came from, and we like to share.

That's what you get for giving us rap. :P
We are a forgiving nation . . . but, c'mon. Rap in country music too?
FSB :D
Thankfully, rap doesn't translate to an instrumental version.

Unfortunately, I'm going to have to agree.
I don't think any "foreign exchange policy or tariff" is going to change anything as it operates today...manufacturers 'abroad' will pay the tariff, and pass the cost onto us. Trump will be happy, only because he see's money changing hands...he won't see that more jobs will stay within our borders (because they won't). He won't see that consumers are the ones being punished, because he's got so much money he's never had to pay THAT close attention to what HE pays for necessities or toys.

P.S.- Politics blow!

One of the problems with offshore, aside from quality control, is that just like cheap cameras, furnishings, and cars (with more to come), once inexpensive, there is a history of getting the foot in the door where higher prices take over once established regardless the place of origin. In case you haven't noticed those cheap knockoffs and originals are increasing in price allowing domestic manufacturers and distributors to raise the cost of similar domestic products. What a deal!

Keeping the cost down usually comes at a loss for the consumer. In some cases it becomes difficult to even find that product of some value. I've even had seating that rusted from the inside out (not the only safety issue that is more prevalent these days). Distant delivery problems, poor availability, parts shortage, and lack of support is not uncommon. Add to that - abusive work conditions and environmental hazards that go unseen or untold. The list goes on. Sure we may have all those things on this side of the pond; however, you can pretty much bet that it is more likely from certain nations.

As my father used to tell me, "You can't get champagne on a beer budget". I say, "A cheap bottle of wine is okay, for those times it's desirable." Only know, you get what you pay for . . . sometimes you get lucky, but the odds are against that. As for Mexico, they do a pretty good job in comparison to many other providers. IMHO. Just ask the many who appreciate their MIM Fenders. YMMV.

But, there's no place like home. :D
