I have right now scn pickups on my strat and they're nice pickups but I want something with a little more sustain. I'm looking for a set of pickups that offer great sustain, that have that single coil bite, a good amount of output, and versatility. My favorite guitarists include David Gilmour who is my number one favorite, Jimmy Page, Jimi Hendrix, Stevie Ray Vaughn, Eric Clapton, Van Halen, Alex Lifeson, Brian May, Joe Satriani, Ritchie Blackmore, Slash, Tom Morello, John Mayer, Kim Thayil, Joe Perry etc. I like to play classic rock, hard rock, progressive, alternative, grunge, blues, jazz, funk and metal.

I know I should try out pickups for myself, but based on personal experience and what you have heard corresponding to list above, what would be the best. I was thinking about lace sensor pickups but I'm not sure.

That is quite the list of both guitarists and musical intrests. I personally believe that it is going to be hard to find pickups alone that will make you happy. It is when you add distortion that things will get complicated.

Amps and pedals can certainly change the sound of your guitar more than pickups. I would suggest a programable digital pedal to allow for a wide range of tones.

If you are bent on changing pu's a couple combinations I could suggest might be a combination of SD quaterpounder pu's or a guy that I have jammed with a couple times has a real unique pu confiq. 2 SD blackouts in the mid and neck and a SD hotrails in the bridge. That might make you happy.

For David Gilmour, EMG offers a pre-wired set called the DG-20 which features the same electronics and wiring as Gilmour's Red-Strat (look up Comfortably Numb Live 1994 London on YouTube for a taste, and there's also some "demos" out there too, try EMG Numb or similar to find those).

I find that I can get a good SRV and Hendrix sound with the Texas Specials (check out http://www.youtube.com/MikeT239). The Custom Shop '69s should give you a good Hendrix sound.

I have no experience with the CS '69s, but I have the other two equipped on my two Strats.

I'll second that texas specials are fantastic for hendrix and most classic rock. Surprisingly they are great for punk like the Clash. They are the single best pu's I've had. The downfall to these is that they are not the best with too much distortion.

I will 2nd the Dimarzio "area" line. They have very little magnet pull so that should help with sustain. I have tried the 57 and 61 and they are awsome. I havent tried the 67 but if your after a hendrixy sound, then those should do the trick.

Custom 69s came stock in my Highway One and they sound great, but I always found them too tame for my tastes, then I replaced the bridge pickup with a Seymour Duncan Hot Rails, which was nice, but it didn't sound right, pretty unbalanced. Now, I have it set up with Fender Hot Noiseless pickups in the neck and middle and a DiMarzio Super Distortion in the bridge. I like hot pickups especially in the bridge, but with such low output pickups, it just didn't sound right. Now I get very heavy tones from the Super Distortion and it's very quiet, no hum at all. I put the Hot Noiseless bridge pickup in my MIM Strat, pairing it with a Seymour Duncan Twang Banger in the middle and Vintage in the neck, not a bad combo either.

Thanks man, I really appreciate it =]

\m/

PS- If you find hum to be very annoying / bothersome, I would recommend the EMG-SA's; I have them installed in my MIM and they do not make a sound (other than the good sounds ;)). Plus, they're high-output. 8)

I find that the bridge pup on the Specials can be quite harsh, but the bridge on the EMG DG-20 set-up sounds nasily (after I screwed around with the SPC and EXG knobs; EXG on about 1-2 and SPC on about 6). Listen to anything that David Gilmour plays on his Red Strat; he uses the same pups and pots (sorry if I said this already).

I'm sure we had a post almost identical to this one two or three months ago, right down to the list of inspiration.

But if you can't be bothered to search the 7000-ish posts entitled "which pickups?" to find all the previous answers to this precise question - then go for Sensors. I've a set of Silver, Blue and Red (neck to bridge) in a much modded Strat. That takes me from my favoured warm jazzy sound at neck to a very aggressive drive at the bridge.

That would cover quite a few of your bases, at any rate.

Cheers - C
